All of us recognize the best throw of Thursdays game against the Seahawk was the deep ball to Aiyuk.
One of the interesting nuggets post game was Shanahan saying he was surprised by that play because it was supposed to be a check down. Brock took the shot.
And this is when I realized, Brock is what Shanahan has needed. The one criticism that is fair to levy on Shanahan is that he is often too conservative in big games. As great of a job he’s done. I think he gets too tight when the big games come.
Enter Brock Purdy, a QB that has Shanahan’s complete confidence and who plays like he has nothing to lose. He’s BCB for a reason. The approach may hurt us sometimes. But you need those guts when the game matters most. I can’t imagine a more perfect compliment to Shanahan.
Shanahan designs the plays, it’s up to purdy to read the coverage and make a decision. KS comments after the game are complimenting purdys play. The amount of nephews on this sub that think KS called a check down on that play is hilarious. The check down was wide open and purdy threw a dime to BA. That’s all he is pointing out.
It wasn’t “supposed” to be a checkdown. What Kyle said was, he thought he would take the check down since the LBs dropped so deep.
This notion that Kyle is a conservative play caller is ludicrous. He just simply has the QB to hit the deep shots that Jimmy couldn’t.
His offense was far from conservative when he had Matt Ryan in Atlanta.

I somewhat disagree here. Kyle is a “controlling” play caller (conservative??). Meaning he want the plays to be executed THE WAY he designs them to be executed. Having a QB who goes off script bothers him.
Will he eventually trust Brock completely and adapt his play calling style to be a bit less “controlling”. Maybe.
An example is when Kyle said that the pick 6 was partially his fault. Why? Because he gave Purdy the CHOICE to flip to a pass play there. And he probably shouldn’t have.
Welp, so much for Kyle / trust.
Andy Reid needed Mahomes. Kobe and Jordan needed Phil. A great coach needs a great player to take their vision to the next level and great players need a coach’s vision to take their game to the next level. It’s a symbiotic relationship. This is what I love about sports.
Also, it also seems that Brock does make up for some of Shanny’s weaknesses like playing too conservatively with a lead and clock management, way less delay of games now. Brock also seems to manage the 2 minute drill really well, too.
