You’ve all seen it: “we shouldn’t draft a qb because that wouldn’t immediately fix our offense and that guy still wouldn’t have a wr to throw to or tackle to protect him”
There are two points on this argument that I hope will stop this nonsense once and for all:
-
If your standard for your first round pick is that he has to fix everything right away then you have only one option at draft day: don’t pick any player at all and just give up. No team that is as bad as the Pats right now will ever fix their team with one single rookie, no matter how high you draft him. This would also mean no MHJ and no Joe Alt because they would not fix everything either.
-
You can make the second part of the argument above about literally any position …
“Oh you want to draft a wr? But who is going to throw him the ball?? And who is gonna protect that guy??”
Or “oh you want to draft a tackle? But who is gonna throw the ball and to whom??” … etc. etc.
It really shouldn’t be hard to understand that fixing one of the three major holes on offense inevitably leaves the other two open. But you obviously have to start somewhere, so why not with the one position that’s usually hardest to get and most valuable (if you happen to have such a high pick)?
So does that mean that it’s qb or bust? No, there are (potentially) legitimate arguments for not taking a qb. For example, if you think that the qbs in this class are overrated and MHJ is sure-fire generational then that’s a good reason to go with the latter. Or if you believe that there is not such a huge gap between maye and qbs available later then let’s for one of those later qbs. But pleeeeease for the love of god, don’t use the annoyingly irrational argument described above. Thank you.
My opinion simply that you usually cannot sign franchise QBs in free agency, but you can easily sign-or-trade for bonafide #1 WRs.
MHJ over any QB in the first round. Full stop. NE has their best chance at a true #1 receiver for the first time in franchise history. Im taking that at all costs. One of Jayden/Penix is going to available late first early second. Soooo let’s go that route instead.
If you like the QBs that are there, I just happen to like MHJ better then Williams and Maye right now. It is a deep draft for WR and OT though so who knows there are always people that come out of no where come the combine. And on draft day ESPN will have some phantom “generational” QB like Lance talked up so high it always happens…
There’s no argument for Williams/Maye +WR7 being better than MHJ + QB5.
MHJ is special in a way that doesn’t come along very often. Best football player available.
If you’re building a house, you don’t put a fancy penthouse on top of it all without all the proper framing and a solid foundation to support it. Same with a football team.
I think it depends on the off season. You have to target a QB. If you can get a quality bridge guy that’s perfect IMO. Draft a WR and tackle and continue to build around the bridge guy for a year or two while improving the overall roster and then getting a QB. Or getting a 2nd4th round QB to develop.
Taking a QB top 3 is too much of a gamble IMO. There are other positions that are easier to scout have guys come in and make immediate impacts.
This is a very deep class for QBs. Harman, Evers, Gabriel, etc… are projected later than they should be. Even Jayden Daniels is. We should draft a QB but not with a top 3 pick, imo. Trade into the late 1R, get MHJ with the early pick (if we have the 2 it’s possible we can trade back for that)
I mostly agree. That said, as I posted a couple of days ago, FA comes between the combine and the draft. The Pats, knowing where they’ll be slotted, should prioritize finding a capable player at QB, WR, and OT in free agency so they can just take BPA in the draft, or trade down if a great opportunity presents itself (e.g., picking up a first in 2025 + still getting one of the top 6 on offense).
Let’s do this
Caleb has been hailed as the next thing… Now will that happen? Given my long experience watching the NFL… Hell fucking no…
But he might be!
WE’RE ONTO THE CELTICS AND BRUINS.
In all seriousness- I never get into the draft talk. Bill will always do something weird and you never know if a rookie is actually going to transition well to the NFL.
