And it looks like there were some rough games last year too? This is the show that helped me find the Kelce podcast this summer, which I then binged and I’ve watched every game this season! Everyone in the game threads seems doomsday each week, but ups and downs in a season are normal right? Is it more that the WR issue seemed unfixable before Rice’s week last week?
Game threads are not good for your sanity. And yeah, we definitely had our issues last year. Lest we forget, we lost to the Bengals because, whaddya know, Kelce fumbled the ball (among other things of course, but had he not fumbled, we likely could’ve won that game)
Texans game was brutal. I remember texting my friends saying chiefs might be on fraud watch and that was like 2nd or 3rd last game of the year
In 2018 there weren’t really and rough games. In part because expectations weren’t super high with a 1st year starter, and in part because for the most part they handled themselves well.
They lost by 3 points to the defending SB champs (43-40). They lost by 3 points in one of the greatest games played against LAR (51-54) and were the first team ever to score 50 and lose. They lost to LAC when LAC went for 2 to end the game and KC couldn’t stop them. Maybe the loss to the seahawks was rough, but I don’t remember fans being too upset, because they were still 11-4 after that game.
2019 was a different story. They lost back-to-back games to IND and HOU that were quite ugly. They destroyed DEN in the game Mahomes dislocated his kneecap. They went on to alternate wins & losses for the next couple weeks with Matt Moore playing in place of Mahomes, and then a very ugly game @TEN. KC had a 9 point lead in the 4th and lost by 3 in a very ugly sequence.
2020 didn’t really have any tough games, apart from maybe Herbert’s first start which went to OT and KC won. But then again, in 2020 they went 14-2 (losing the last week as they rested their starters).
2021 had its own share of bad games, including losing @BAL (and starting 1-2, first time Patrick ever had a losing record during a season). The BAL game they were just unable to put them away despite a strong effort to start the game and CEH fumbled while setting up a potential game winning FG. They got beat bad by BUF (18 points) and then a couple weeks later went in to TEN and lost by 24 points, where the offense only put up a FG. Even the game @CIN was bad. They simply couldn’t stop CIN for the final 6 minutes, letting them kick a chip-shot FG as time expired.
2022 had tough games too, including losing @IND, and needing to go to OT to win @HOU who was abysmal last year. They again lost to BUF, this time Patrick throwing an INT on the final drive. They also lost to CIN when Travis fumbled the ball, similar to the fumble against PHI this year, except this was more at mid-field and not in the redzone.
So apart from 2018, when expectations were low and Mahomes set the league on fire with 5000 yards and 50 tds, winning the MVP by like week 12, and 2020 where they were all but unstoppable, the Chiefs have struggled at times.
But then again, it’s the NFL. And the guys on the other team are also paid professional athletes.
There have been very few seasons where a team has not had weird or difficult games.
Awesome summary, thank you!
