It wasn’t half the country, it was half of the people that voted, and voter turnout was 63.7%. I am always annoyed by this particular argument because the republicans are doing so much to disenfranchise voters. They are wild unpopular, they are also wildly corrupt. Not that dems are better, mind you, but painting half the country as racist fascists is just plain wrong
