I think spell casters need a break item. It just feels weird that only right click heroes can use break. There are a lot of spell caster cores that would really benefit from this. Not sure what the general thoughts are.

Strong agree. Its ridiculous that there is only one item that breaks, and it would have been an easy adjustment once the tank meta got out of hand
The break mechanic should be moved from silver edge to a new item. The item should be something neutral with stats so that both cores and supps can buy
To make it balanced I think that they could make a break effect for supports that can be dispelled, otherwise it would too strong to easily break heroes, since some o the are completely negated when under break (huskar, bristle, etc). Quick note: silver edge’s break cannot be dispel led, it just doesn’t go through spell immunity.

The beauty of DOTA is that items are not homogenized. Decisions matter, including item build and hero pick.
I have the same opinion. Passive abilities have the potential to be incredibly broken and yet they cannot be silenced or mana-drained, but only a handful of heroes have the ability to break, and a lot of those only through talents or aghs. The only option to apply break for heroes that don’t have it innately is through a 5.5k gold item that lasts for 4 seconds and only applies it after a successful hit, and you need to be a hero that makes good use of invisibility to buy it. Not at all a viable option to disable passive abilities a large amount of the time. And yet any patch where Bristle is allowed to steamroll the game you get people going “hurr just buy silver edge, the 4 seconds is surely all you need!”
I think if I had to design a new one, I’d agree it shouldn’t just be “spellcaster’s silver edge”. Most debuffs in the game only have one item associated with it so it should be an item designed with most heroes in mind with a good twist. Maybe it could be like a bottle of parasitic worms that applies the target and user with break for an equal amount of time like medallion debuff. Makes it more reliable than SE with a good amount of risk; of course, if the user has no passives it’d be a lot stronger so there could be the armor debuff and maybe a poison affect as well.
I feel like break is too strong. It should be an item that is not purchased very often or give it to heroes that are currently dog shit now.
Phylactery should have break instead of that awkward slow with little to no use.
My Suggestion:
New Item- Spell-caster’s Edge
Upgrade from Glimmer cape and Phylactery- thus all glimmer cape effects applies.
Recipe - Glimmer Cape + Phylactery + 250g recipe
New - Break - the first single target spell casted while turning invisible will deal an additional 200 bonus magic damage, slow by 15% and disable the targets passive abilities for 2.5 seconds.
I always thought phylactery is a weird item but this upgrade will make it much more appealing buy for supports imo while not making a super broken item and also keep with the theme of break items being tied to invisibility.
Last game I had to make silver edge on spectre to deal with bristle which felt really bad. So I kinda agree

Before they buffed Dagon with lifesteal, my theory was Dagon should break for 1 second + 1 second per level of Dagon. Something like that. But totally agree that silver edge is way too niche of an item to be the only item that applies break.
