I do find slop memes to be annoying, but at least slop artists don’t constantly spam me with the same 5 images repeatedly.

If making your own memes is what you prefer, do that instead of posting the same unattributed images over and over again. It feels like y’all are working against what you actually want, which is authentic OC.

It’s not about OC in memes but yes, the authenticity. Memes are “self replicating units of culture” so of course the same images will be posted again and again and again with changes that evolve the memes over time.

The insertion of AI into meme culture feels like someone introduced a cancerous mutation into our memes. Whenever I see an AI take on an older meme there’s a genuine feeling of unease. I think it’s the uncanny valley between the authentic feeling that comes from the context and connection we have with the actual meme it’s mimicking and the soullessness of AI imagery.

In this particular case I feel a badly edited crop of Sam Altman’s face pasted onto the meme would hit better, but I’ll admit, I’m old and maybe out of touch.

I actually find it interesting to see that they seem to have skipped the whole “everyone needs an AI subscription for their everyday tasks”-phase and went straight for “technology isn’t for the serfs” angle.

Guess that happens when a case of collective insanity proves that you don’t need any working business model to get rich, just enough idiots to pump an endless bubble.

And the reason is people making slop like this meme without a second thought.

I didn’t say slop memes, and personal use definitely influences their success, otherwise they wouldn’t bother with it.
