I’m loving all the recent talk about things like this around the world to consider the animals’ wellbeing from firework displays.
Animals’ bodies can function very differently from ours and some already have heart rates, respiration, or metabolisms already working at the max limits they can withstand. Stress kills a lot of animals. The article mentions lots of birds dying from collisions trying to escape danger they cannot understand, but rabbits, for example can get toxic surges of adrenaline that will kill them from extreme stress triggers.
On New Year’s Day in 2025, more than 1,000 birds were found dead near a hiking trail in Bulgaria, just over a kilometre from a site where fireworks had been set off, after panicked birds flew into trees and each other.
Last year on New Year’s Eve, I walked to the shops in the morning and heard some newly hatched chicks up in a tree, aggressively chirping to be fed by momma bird.
In the evening, the neighbor on the other side of the street set off one of those firework batteries which only go, well, about as high as a tree. So, basically those chicks either had a heart attack or are traumatized for life.
