Curious as to what the sentiment around Will Lutz is from a broader Broncos fan base. It seems like every week in my Game Day group chat with my buddies someone always brings up wanting to get rid of Lutz. On Thanksgiving my brother even brought it up. We are all Broncos fans and watch the games. Sure we aren’t NFL coaches but we have a good understanding of the game. I think Lutz is doing fine, but apparently I’m the only one within my group.

Just for some perspective:

Lutz is 24/26 92.3% on FGs

Tied for 4h in FG attempts

9th in FG make percentage (min 5 attempts)

In my opinion the 2 misses he has are excusable. The raiders miss, he was still fairly new to the team. I chalk that up to a chemistry issue with the holder. The miss against the chiefs was a block, which to me is the line’s fault.

I look at it as what are our options? Who’s better than him and available. Compared to Lutz’s 24/26 McManus is 23/26 and Brett Maher is 19/23.

Cutting Brandon McManus and then trading for him left a bad taste in my mouth, but right now I’m happy with his play. He cost us the Raiders game, which sucks, but he’s been reliable since then. Buffalo was pretty windy so I don’t blame him for the misses in that game.

    Chemistry issue with the holder?

He’s a pro kicker dude. The raiders loss was due to a missed kick.

IF we make the playoffs, I hope we don’t have to revisit this conversation for a reason which I will not name 🫡

He’s definitely been pretty reliable aside from Week 1 and the nearly wrecked finish of the Buffalo game (not being sarcastic, I think he’s pretty clearly been money outside of those two instances). However, I want to see how he does with longer FGs. His longest this season is just 52 yards. His career long is 60, which he made last year in New Orleans, so we know he has a pretty strong leg. I just want to see him do it wearing orange, lol.

Can’t complain. He’s been solid and has hit multiple game winners. Even though the bills game relied on luck

Lutz is the kicker version of Russ.

A few years ago he was one of the top kickers in the NFL. Now he is not the kicker that he was.

However, he’s not an active weakness in the team, and some of our rivals do carry shaky kickers which could come to bite them.
