Disclaimer: Only on a team friendly deal and if he’s in shape and ready to play.
When it comes to opinions on Wentz, I think a lot of the narrative has been exaggerated or overblown. The reality is that he’s one of the few QBs who is actually available who might be able to get up to speed quickly (the reviews of him taking the reigns in his rookie season were glowing… watch his Gruden QB camp for further proof) and has an NFL quality arm.
In regard to his history of performance: PFF wise, his play did fall off a cliff from 2020 - 2022. That is true. Getting shipped around to different teams probably didn’t help. In 2020, he obviously had a rough start, was sat, and finished 50th in pass grade for the year. Hurts finished 55th (and was worse in every QB graded category)… that team just wasn’t very good (finished 4-11). The team improved significantly when Smith was drafted and even more when they acquired Brown.
In 2017-2019 Wentz was a top 15 rated passer including 2019 when he put a talentless team on his shoulders and somehow got them to the playoffs. The leading WR for the last part of the season was Greg Ward, a converted QB. Can you imagine if they draft JJ instead of Arcega Whiteside? In 2017, the Super Bowl year, he was a virtually unanimous MVP candidate when he went down.
Wentz is 6’5", has an NFL caliber arm, has good football IQ, and is 30 years old. If KAM can sign him to a team friendly deal and you have a problem with that, you’re being silly. Also, even if that does happen, it’s not a guarantee that he sees the field either. If he’s not showing promise in practice, KOC wouldn’t start him over Mullens or Hall.
Also, this script writes itself. Wentz plays a huge role in almost clinching the Eagles a first round bye in 2017 in 12 games (11-1), only to go down and have Philly put up a Foles statue at the stadium when they win the SB. He has a Super Bowl ring, but even Philly fans barely recognize or appreciate the role he played. Now he has a chance to step in and take reigns the same way Foles did, and this time take a team all the way to the promise land. Made for Hollywood!!
Wentz could lead the shower prayers with no problems.
