For the last several years describing Denver’s units that primarily return and cover kicks typically required omitting the word “Special”. Because frankly they were…not very good at anything. Well unlike the other head coaches in Denver’s recent history, Sean Payton understands the importance of Special teams being for lack of a better word, well…special. A major contributor to losing every time they played the Chiefs since 2015 was KC consistently kicked the Broncos collective asses on special teams.
One of the more satisfying aspects of yesterday’s win was Denver’s Special teams finally were able to make plays that helped the team instead of hurting them. I’ve been reading all the praise and deservedly so for the Offense and Defense. But how about showing some love for Assitant Head Coach Mike Westhoff, Special teams Coordinator Ben Kotwica and Special teams Assistant Chris Banjo? We also need to include a few ST players that have been shining like Delarrin Turner Yell, Tremont Smith, Marvin Mims Jr.
I understand that a Denver field goal attempt was blocked but outside of that, the Mims return and the play made by Smith to insure Sanders was able to recover the muffed punt were very important contributions to finally breaking the losing streak to the Chiefs. One final ST stat comparison to consider, Denver return yards 97, KC return yards 11.
