I think that this chart demonstrates two realities of the Ballard regime. He doesn’t overspend in free agency, and he hasn’t found a consistent answer in the draft at defensive end.

If there’s one position where the Colts have failed to draft well, it’s at DE. Banogu and Turay were both misses. Paye is underperforming his bottom half of the first round draft position.

I don’t think that defensive end is a position that you can expect RAS scores to predict. Paye was a great run stopper in college, and he’s a great run stopper in the pros. But his pass rush hasn’t developed sufficiently. I kept expecting Paye to have that breakout season, but I’ve given up. He’s never going to be a premier pass rusher.

Ballard needs to go strictly off tape with his next DE pick. Throw size and high jump out the window and just pick based off of pure skill as shown in the tape.

We can’t afford another whiff at defensive end. It’s too important. If there’s one position to overpay in free agency, it’s pass rush. We need it to be consistent, and it’s inconsistent.

Actually despite the looks is getting a lot of double teams and is actually top 5 or was last week in getting pressure in the QB

They get pressure against poor offensive lines, but they get little or none versus decent offensive lines.

We lack a premium pass rusher at defensive end. It’s really the Achilles heal of the defense. We are fine in line depth and have premium defensive tackles. But we need consistent pressure off at least one edge on third down.

That is the Colts biggest overall weakness.
