I totally thought that after the change they would fix this problem. There were several ways to change your language in-game anyway, they just made it more clear, but this change makes no sense, as a lot of languages have different letters.
I play on RU server, everyone types in RU. For me to understand their writing I HAVE TO play with russian client, because otherwise, this happens:
All Russian symbols turn into this
With this comes the question: what’s the point of this change? Why can I still see russian letters in client, even after changing the language, but I can’t communicate with my team in-game? I doubt it’s very hard to compile all language fonts, and even if you are worried about user’s space, just let them choose “Additional languages to install” so this won’t happen again.
i agree it needs improving but the change is a good one. having more options as opposed to less is (almost) never a bad thing. i’m an english speaker playing in asia, for example, and as a jungle main it’s extremely important to understand pings (flash timers etc), so i’m very happy with this change.

Fonts can be much harder to deal with that you believe.
But it’s doable, sure. It’s a bit sad that the in-game font doesn’t handle at least the three main European alphabets (Latin/Greek/Cyrillic). They’re so close in functionality and style that it really doesn’t make much sense not to have them all in a single typeface.
I moved to Hong Kong from England, so I play on the JP server as it has the best ping and is the mid point between here and Korea which is where I plan to move to next year.
Guess who cant speak Japanese… so struggles to navigate the options menu to set up keybinds, navigate the client even with years I can muscle memory to everywhere, and cant read my ingame spells so need to open the wiki to double check any balance changes as I don’t play daily anymore.
