So I’ve never played any FF. But recently I got PS plus and that comes up with plenty of FF games: FF VII (orginal and remake), VIII remastered, IX, X/X-2 remastered, Type-0, XII, and XIV. Which one should I try first to get me interested so that I wanna play the rest too?

*Also, would there be any reasons why they wouldn’t include IX, XI, and XIII? Just find it odd that it’s basically all games from 7 to 14 except those 🤔

XI and XIV are MMOs, and XI is basically not a thing anymore. The extended XIII trilogy was not well received, so I’m not surprised that keeping it playable for modern audiences isn’t a priority, even if Snow is the best and anyone who disagrees with that is objectively wrong.

I’d recommend trying X or XII first.

X is a much more tight narrative and has far better character writing, but it’s very linear. There isn’t much to do in terms of exploration or sidequests and unless you really like the Blitzball minigame, you’re going to basically be doing a sequence of straightforward dungeon with enemy fights, occasional boss fight, and cutscenes with a few puzzles sprinkled into the mix. It has the occasional fun minigame outside of Blitzball (I don’t care what anyone says, Calm Lands Chocobo Balloon racing is fun) but if you’re not invested in the core cast in the first few hours, it’s gonna be a rough ride.

XII is a lot more open in terms of being a world, and I loved my time with it, but the story is weak as hell and the game is more about being a game than a story. I’m not going to say the cast is forgettable, but they’re not notably memorable or engaging the way most Final Fantasy casts are. It functionally plays like a single player MMO and if you like that sort of grind, it can be a great time. Like X, it’s worth giving a couple hours to try, but if those first couple of hours don’t grab you, don’t go farther because that’s what you’re getting for the next 40+ hours.

I’d also tentatively recommend XV. It’s not my favorite and has a lot of flaws, but it’s got a really good vibe of four dudes going on a roadtrip and is, at times, jawdroppingly gorgeous even today and has some really cool moments. I keep a.copy installed on my PC despite being nearly a hundred fucking gigabytes just for the ability to boot it up and play the Aranea bonus boss fight at any camp because once you unlock Noctis’ entire skill tree, you can literally have an entire mid-air fight where you’re not only having a great time, but you have full control over your positioning and tempo of the fight to the point where it feels like a DMC game.

    FFX

Then 3/6 and maybe 5 if you like grinding and/or min-maxing.
