Emphasis on enjoy.
I can never fault a team for counterpicking. It’s a very viable strategy for winning.
I’ve been practicing my genji recently and went 16-1 first round. The next round they went moira brig mei sym monkey. I started laughing because 1. I finally understand genji players & 2. Like damn it was all 5 lol.
It was no problem. I counter swapped as well. We won the game (was mostly a matchmaking diff)
But, I couldn’t help but wonder. Did their DPS really enjoy mei sym? Are those the heroes they have fun with? Or the ones they thought would help them win?
Yes it’s “part of the game”. No one doubts that. But does anybody actually ENJOY this part of the game?
I remember before OW2 came out, iirc, they said 5v5 would help tone down the need for counterpicking. But it turned out to be the opposite since now you directly counter 20% of the team instead of 16% of the team.
I’m just interested in what people have to say.
in my games its always the same:
I start with Dva, enemy picks Zarya. Then i pick Reinhardt, enemy switches to Ramatra.
Then i also take Ramatra, sometimes they change to Orisa then, but i dont care, there is no real counter to ramatra
No, unless it’s against Widow or Pharah
It’s just annoying because generally everyone starts with a character they like or main and then have to be forced to counter pick the counter pick after you are the better player. Like i main tracer and as soon as I’m in my groove both of the enemy dps go like soldier cree or somethin. Like I’m mechanically better, but they get the advantage because they swap. Now I’m getting hit with skill nade.
At the end of the day it does come down to a skill issue. I have no problem playing into counters, it’s just annoying and i have to be extra cautious.
This is why from 2016, devs and players alike have recommended that you learn 2 or 3 characters in each class and master them. One tricking a hero was never the design of this game yall play too much apex
I dont like doing it at all this is overwatch not pokemon
Overwatch was designed from day 1 to be a game that has counters and designed to make you counterpick so “this is overwatch not Pokémon” it’s a horrific terrible argument
Absolutely not. I feel like im winning because im swapping not because im good at the game.
I play DVA in GM1 - Top 500. Instantly after winning the first fight the enemy tank goes Zarya. I basically have to swap as well or else I lose. Especially at this rank
no, maybe bc i don’t care abt winning. i will swap if someone tells me to, otherwise i’ll play the character i’m the best at/enjoy playing
Yes. It’s part of the game. It’s always been. It’s not going anywhere. Get over it.
Edit: the last part is not specifically aimed at you 😅 just newer players who haven’t adjusted and think this is a problem.
Only if the opposing team has player in chat that is being toxic.
If I do choose to counterpick, I let them know I’m doing it and tell them fun time is over after I kill them each time.
Meh it doesnt bother me. I get to play more characters that way.
I like the three supports I main equally, and choose between them depending on situation. So yes lol
Yes. Too many of you f2p players are wanting this game to be apex. Counter picking has always been a vital part of the game and adds a layer of strategy. Too many of you expect to climb the ranks as a one trick, but that’s not how the game was designed. Quit trying to make this game something it’s not. You’re supposed to counterpick
No, I don’t enjoy it. I’d rather be able to play the heroes I like and let my opponents play what they like rather than feeling like I have to play this or that because the enemy team has something or have to swap because the entire enemy team counter picks me/our comp.
Soft counters are probably necessary but when picking a hero alone just gives you such a large advantage that it makes up for individual skill on that hero vs. something else it’s just dumb and boring.
Being good at “countering” is like knowing the pokemon type charts in an AI fight, it’s not really a skill. It’s just you remembering something pretty basic.
This is why Mystery Heroes is the way
Don’t need to, got to top 500 elo one tricking soldier, it actually helps you improve by playing into counters. Unless their full squad is playing hard counters, there isn’t a huge need to swap unless you feel like you can punish a weakness better on another hero
You went 16-1? Nice, but no one in their right mind is gonna tell themselves “oh the genji is messing up my team, let me just keep letting him do that”
