Emphasis on enjoy.
I can never fault a team for counterpicking. It’s a very viable strategy for winning.
I’ve been practicing my genji recently and went 16-1 first round. The next round they went moira brig mei sym monkey. I started laughing because 1. I finally understand genji players & 2. Like damn it was all 5 lol.
It was no problem. I counter swapped as well. We won the game (was mostly a matchmaking diff)
But, I couldn’t help but wonder. Did their DPS really enjoy mei sym? Are those the heroes they have fun with? Or the ones they thought would help them win?
Yes it’s “part of the game”. No one doubts that. But does anybody actually ENJOY this part of the game?
I remember before OW2 came out, iirc, they said 5v5 would help tone down the need for counterpicking. But it turned out to be the opposite since now you directly counter 20% of the team instead of 16% of the team.
I’m just interested in what people have to say.
You can really tell who played OW1 and who the new players are in this thread. Counterpicking is a fundamental staple of the game. It’s been here since 2016 and always has been. I’ve seen people argue “This is overwatch, not pokemon” and “I feel like I should be rewarded for being good at the game and not counterswapping” when in reality what sets this game apart from other shooters, is game knowledge, game sense, and ability to adapt to new strategies. It’s the reason a lot of us fell in love with this game and set it apart from other shooters like cod, apex, Battlefield, or whatever. If you’re expecting to climb ranks and be good from being a one trick, this might be the wrong game for you. A lot of us love that we can compete with these ultra twitchy shooters because we can out smart and out play them. I’m a huge sports guy, and if you play sports you know it’s not always the most athletic team that is the best team. I think this logic applies to overwatch as well and it’s a reason a lot of us like this game. There’s a lot that goes on in this game that doesn’t show up on the scoreboard and your ability to counterpick and play a diverse hero pool is one of them
TL;DR: quit crying about counterpicking and instead learn how to play the game properly you cry babies
