Hi all,

I have been using a 5g router since I moved in to a new apartment which still needs to be connected to the fiber network (I live in Denmark). When gaming (CS2, Valorant, Rocket league), I have been experiencing lag spikes every 10 to 30 seconds and packet losses (usually between 0.5 and 2% on CS2). There is nothing on the task manager using more than 0.1 Mbps.
Speed tests are usually pretty good for a 5G router: 100-350mbps down, 10-20mbps up and 23-30ms of ping.

Here is what I have tried so far:
- Find another spot for the 5g router where the 5G and 4G signal was the highest
- Restart router
- Change DNS
- Flush DNS
- Find the frequency that is the less used by my neighbours (that are probably all using the same type of router until the fibernet is up, only one provider offers 5G router with unlimited internet access)
- Alternate between 2G and 5G WiFi
- Prevent my computer from searching for new WiFi sources using a small .bat script (worked for a week, then symptoms came back)
- Connect a ethernet cable. Speedtest is roughly the same, though it starts lower at 90mbps before climbing all the way to 350mpbs by the end of the test. (Cable is an ARISKEEN Cat 8 Ethernet cable, that I just bought from amazon. I have just seen in the FAQ that some ethernet cables might be crap, so I am unsure how to check whether this one is crap or not.)

Internet provider said they couldnt do anything because speedtests are fine, and basically just told me to restart the router.

Could it be just because of the overusage of the 5G network in my area, or would it be obvious on speedtests?

I really thought the problem was the wifi signal from the router to my computer, but I believe that the tests with the ethernet cable tends to show that it is either a computer or a router problem. Also, I am afraid that changing to fiber network whenever it comes may not fix my problem.

If anybody has any idea to what could be wrong here, I will gladly read your advice!

Thanks!

Do you experience the same issues on your phone?

If you are using windows it might also be an idea to check if your PC and the router have the same DNS set. If not, change the windows settings to automatic or set the same DNS between both devices.

Also check if it’s not just the whole PC lagging, CPU usage spiking? Disk read maxed out? Full RAM? Stuff like that.

    Hope you fix your problems!

Edit: also note that 5G and 5Ghz wifi are vastly different technologies not really related to each other.
