I currently have a 540i running 20 inch staggered RFT Summer tires in Phoenix. A somewhat unfortunate thing is my next job is taking me to Albuquerque where it gets much colder. It doesn’t snow much there but the winter low temps often dip below freezing. I’m thinking I could keep the summers on the original wheels and get a set of Pilot Sport AS4s on 18 inch BBS SX for the winter season. Thoughts?

Summers do decently on dry cold surface, but its still a gamble if you have temps around freezing. Even without snowing there can be moisty mornings when the road is slippery.
I’d go with the spare set for the winter - you can always sell these later on. Optionally - all-seasons when your summer set is due for a change.
