I want to preface this by saying I love me some grant. I love his game and how he is a vibes guy. That being said, he and Malcom belong on contending teams and both are not in the youth timeline. They should both be traded before the deadline and I have full confidence that Joe will get us the best packages for both. What are your thoughts? What do the potential packages look like?
We’re not trying to become an exclusively rookie/25 and under team. We need vets on good contracts too. This is definitely going to be a figure things out year. A lot of movement on the roster is likely before the beginning of next season. That being said, I don’t think Grant is necessarily a guy we need to move at all. Brogdon makes more sense because of his contract and the fact that he’s coming off the bench behind Scoot already (at the moment).
Now if we eventually have some other young forwards that are so incredibly good that we need to give them starter spots (Walker, Camara, Rupert, Murray, etc), this could be another discussion. Likewise, if there is a bidding war for Grant’s services we’d have to consider it. All in all though, Grant’s on a contract that should look more and more reasonable as time goes on. He’ll still be in his prime for most of it at least and we’re not in any rush to trade away all our decent players. We still want to eventually win games right? Right?
You tank stans won’t be happy until you’ve constructed a roster that can’t win a single game.
He can’t be traded until Dec 15th. Unless there has already been a wink and nod deal that couldn’t be executed through an S&T (can’t get 5 years, etc.), it’s going to be about 20-ish games before he could be moved. We won’t know what potential packages may be out there until about 1/4 of the way through the season.
POR doesn’t need to trade JG. There is no top 3 pick at the PF spot that JG is taking developmental minutes away from. There’s no shooting gravity outside of Ant without JG, the 3 is worth more than the 2, you have to be able to spread the floor. JG is not a problem in the locker room, and he’s cool being here.
A couple of years from now if POR is still looking at least a couple more years away from sniffing the playoffs - Then yes, JG might rather be traded to a playoff team once he’s in his 30’s.
By the third year of his contract, he will be below an average starter contract. 4+ year FRP’s signing their second contract will make more than him. Those players have to get to the years and get the contracts, without trade restrictions/poison pills, in order for POR to keep the contract slot, so they don’t lose a starter level slot.
Mookie Dew is a different situation. Long term, he probably has one “big” contract left. At 30 on a 2 year deal, he is in the situation now that JG may be in 2-3 years from now. For Bird rights purposes, it’s in everyone’s best interest to get him to the team that wants him to re-sign when his contract is up, ASAP. “Most of the past two seasons” is the middle Bird rights tier, and the re-signing team could offer/match more than one season Bird rights.
They sell tickets, I see them as break in case you want to win.
