If you’re struggling to keep reading, I would just skip or skim interludes. You can always circle back to them, and they don’t tie in directly enough in the first book to ruin the experience. I loved the books, but have always struggled with perspective shifts. They jar me out of the story every time.
It’s not really possible in later books, but whenever I re-read the first book, I read straight through with either Kaladin or Shallan. Other fans will have opinions on this, but I don’t like jumping between perspectives when they don’t tie in yet.
If you like the world and the story so far, I would try to finish the first book at least. Then judge from there I’d you want to continue. If you’re not into it though, you’re not into it.
I think this is normal. As you get older your tastes and preferences change. Maybe you’ll circle back, but maybe not. Just read the things that suit your current interests
I’ve been feeling this way about Sanderson lately. I loved the Stormlight Archive series, but the last two books came out during some pretty intense years of life. I think I skimmed a good part of both of those books. Then the year of Sanderson happened, and I was really excited for the hype of experiencing the novels as they came out. But, when it came down to it, I wasn’t in a fantasy mood this year. He went from my top 3 authors to not finishing any of his works since 2020.
He might bounce back, but he might not. And I’m ok with it. I’ve read a lot of good books this year.
I get it. I did a lot of reading for research topics in college, which probably increased my comprehension significantly, but it didn’t transfer over to my independent reading.
I pretty much had Pratchett (and a few others) on repeat throughout graduate school on audiobook. I’m still cycling back to comfort reads, and most of my fiction reading has been rereads this year.
