It feels like the entire vehicle is bouncing and wheels are about to fly off -the shaking was so violent that the speedometer needle was oscillating
Warped front brakes or loose wheel/loose lug nuts can both cause bad shaking
Possibly even a bad wheel bearing, but that usually makes some sort of constant humming or “roaring” sound that increases with speed
If it’s loose wheel/loose lug nuts or a bad wheel bearing those are EMERGENCY items you should get fixed asap, if your wheel(s) fall off the car while driving you can suddenly lose control or crash and hurt either yourself or someone else. Put the bill on a credit card if you have to, it’s that urgent in terms of your safety
If the brakes are really hot or “smoking” then it could possibly be warped rotors
I had a bad/violent shake (entire car would shake when braking on the highway) in my front-end this past summer, and in my case it turned out to be “extremely warped” (my mechanic’s exact words in the work order paperwork) front rotors
Last two times I needed a wheel bearing it seemed to run between $370-$420
With first shop I had a coupon so it was only like $329, with the second shop it was around $420
