  • GAME NOTES:

Damn. That was such an ugly game. The first quarter wasn’t bad, we were clicking on both ends of the floor, and assisted all 8 made field goals in the quarter. Even though we only scored 25, we gave up just 24 points. We were moving the ball, everybody was getting touches, and our offense was flowing. Then shit hit the fan. Fewest points scored in a game by us in 20 months lol.

The biggest discrepancy was points in the paint. Big credit to Jaren Jackson Jr for disrupting our flow all game. Buddy had 6 blocks on us, and was everywhere. We were heavily outscored 58-36 in the paint.

Another big discrepancy was fastbreak points. Although the turnover battle was fairly even, the Grizzlies ran, and they ran fast. 23 fastbreak points compared to just 9 from us. Pitiful.

John Collins had a great game. He was absolutely killing it in the first half, scoring 15. It was pretty frustrating to see him no longer be involved in our offense in the second half. Again, credit to JJJ for shutting it down, but he was our only consistent option. We needed to find a way to get him involved throughout the game. Collins finished with 17 points, 7-14 shooting, 3-5 from 3, 4 rebounds.

Credit to Simone Fontecchio too. Although he shot 4-13, all of his made field goals came in the second half. Compared to last year, his shooting and defense has come a long way. 4-8 from 3, 4-13 from the field, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 12 points for him. His defense on Desmond bane was pretty good, forcing him to pass a lot more than Bane probably wanted to.

Keyonte George has really struggled with Lauri out. I think he feels more pressure to perform as a top option, and is forcing things. He looks more smooth when he is able to play with Lauri. Keyonte finished with 8 points on 2-6 shooting (2-4 from 3), 2 assists, 2 turnovers, 3 rebounds. Not a good game from him tonight.

Jordan Clarkson played an alright game. I would’ve liked to have seen him keep up the playmaking skills he showcased last game, but that is wishful thinking. 4-10 shooting, 2-5 from 3, 12 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds, 4 turnovers. He was forcing some bad passes out there, and dribbled off his foot twice I believe, but only once for a turnover.

Yurtseven was getting eaten alive down low. Really tough game from him on both ends, although he did have a great putback dunk on a wild THT layup. 4 points, 4 rebounds in 15 minutes for Omer.

Walker Kessler came off the bench again, although he played 28 mintues. I think it is because he plays really well off of Kelly, and with Lauri still out it makes more sense to have him with floor stretchers and other playmakers. Kessler struggled around the rim, going 4-9 from inside the arc, and went 0-2 on his 3 point attempts. Both of them were deadass, so take that as you will. 7 rebounds, 6 blocks, 9 points. His defense down low was good, but one guy can only do so much.

Our bench unit was terrible. 38 points from the bench, which a lot of it came in garbage time. Our bench play was highlighted by an incredibly inefficient night from our bench backcourt of THT & Sexton.

THT looked absolutely terrible. One of the worst games I’ve seen from him. 2-12 shooting, 1-5 from 3 for 5 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers in 24 minutes of action. The amount of times where he would hold the ball for 16+ seconds in a possession and then put up a terrible shot triple teamed in the paint was too many to count.

Sexton was not much better. 9 points on 3-10 shooting, 1-4 from 3, paired with 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 turnovers in 22 minutes. He would just attack and attack the paint but he wasn’t getting calls, and wasn’t scoring, and definitely wasn’t passing out. I don’t know what he was doing out there.

Kelly Olynyk looked good offensively, but couldn’t stop anybody 1-on1 defensively, or even help out on drives. 2-2 shooting, 1-1 from 3, 5 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals. His two steals were good, but that doesn’t minimize a poor defensive effort from him.

Ochai Agbaji played pretty good. I was ragging on him hard early this season, but the last 5 or so games he has turned it around. 2-5 shooting, 1-4 from 3 for 5 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and just -1 in 21 minutes. It felt like he was active in our offense, active on defense, and disrupting the rhythm of Memphis a bit.

Lastly, Luka Samaic got 6 minutes of garbage time, and was the only jazzman to finish with a + +/- tonight, with +6. 2-2 shooting, 1-1 from 3 for 5 points.

This was such an ugly game from the second quarter on. We were getting absolutely hammered inside, and couldn’t attack the paint. Again, major props to JJJ & Bismack Biyombo for stopping all of our efforts. Those two had more blocks than our entire team combined.

    Anyway.

    6-12. Hurry back Lauri

  • GAME NOTES:

Welcome back Jordan Clarkson! Although he didn’t shoot the ball well, he was absolutely our best playmaker tonight.

This was another gritty all around team victory. I like how with Lauri out, it becomes everybody’s responsibility to score, and get it done. We did that tonight, and we did that Saturday as well.

Let’s start with Keyonte George. He had 12 points at halftime, and cooled off the second half. This was one of the worst playmaking games I’ve seen, highlighted by a bad pass on a fast break, and I think it is because he feels the pressure to score with Lauri out. His defense was great in the first half, even getting a few stops on Ingram and a few steals. He finished with a team high (and career high) 19 points on 6-14 shooting, 3-8 from deep, 4-6 from the line. 3 assists, 2 turnovers, 2 steals, 5 rebounds tonight.

Simone Fontecchio was very impressive tonight. While his stats don’t jump out at you, he was looking to bother Ingram all night, and it was relentless. Offensively, 4-9 shooting, 3-8 from 3, 3-4 from the line for 14 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals in 28 minutes. I’m really glad that Fontecchio is getting his moment to shine, and his defense looks much improved from last year. He was playing like a dog out there

John Collins looked more involved than he did Saturday. It seemed like Hardy was trying to get him involved in sets, and get him a few early shots. It worked, and he hit both of his 3’s in the first quarter and overall looked more comfortable and fluid in the offense. He ended up with 12 points on 4-9 shooting (2-3 inside the arc), 2-6 from deep, and 2-3 from the line. He didn’t light up the glass like he has earlier in the season, but it’s nothing to worry about in my eyes.

Jordan Clarkson came back from his sickness, and looked great from a playmaking perspective. Shooting, not so much, although he hit some clutch buckets for us. 4-16 shooting, 2-9 from 3, 6-6 from the line, 16 points, 10 assists(!!!), 1 turnover (!!!), 4 rebounds. He had probably the best playmaking game of his career, and it really elevated us when our offense was going stale in the third quarter especially. I’m proud JC is able to make those plays when needed, hopefully he is able to use this as a catapult into a great season.

Omer Yurtseven got the start over Walker Kessler again, but I don’t know how much longer Hardy can keep Kessler out of the lineup. Omer looked pretty good, and provided some good defense on Valanciunas which is all you can ask for. 7 points, 10 rebounds (5 offensive), 2 assists, 2 blocks in 22 minutes tonight. He has surprised me with his toughness since he got inserted in the lineup. I’m a fan of his and I hope that he continues to get minutes when our lineup gets more set.

Kessler was an absolute monster off the bench. Whatever injury he had must’ve been terrible because he looks like a whole new player since coming back. To start the season he was sluggish, couldn’t handle the ball, and struggled to box out. Now he is doing it all. 14 points on 7-9 shooting, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks. I’m glad he is back to his normal self on both ends. His impact defensively is huge.

Ochai Agbaji has looked great offensively the last two games, again proving me wrong. I haven’t been the highest on him, but his shooting and offensive decision making these last few games have been hard to ignore. Looking at the box score, you only see 12 points on 4-7 shooting, 3-6 from 3, 1-1 from the line, but his impact goes beyond the boxscore. He provided good defense and was ready to shoot whenever he got the ball. Still need to see him handle the ball more, but I’m glad he was willing to shoot and was hitting his shots.

THT didn’t have the best night shooting, but was such a great playmaker tonight. 2-9 shooting, 0-3 from 3, 1-1 from the line, but 7 assists with NO TURNOVERS! That is the improvement we need. While we desperately need his shot to start falling, his playmaking was great tonight.

Kelly Olynyk didn’t do much scoring, but finished with 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 points, and 5 fouls lol. Love Kelly. He fits his role nicely. His connection with Kessler is great, they connected with another alley-oop tonight.

Collin Sexton had such a great game Saturday, it was sad to see him go back to his mediocrity so quickly. While he shot 4-9 and 3-6 from 3, He had no assists with 4 turnovers. His defense was great, snagging two steals and doing a good job on Dyson Daniels and on switches, but the inconsistency is his biggest knock right now. At least THT was handling the ball well.

    2 wins in a row!!!

    6-11 BABY!

  • GAME NOTES:

Firstly, welcome back Walker Kessler! Although he didn’t start, he was the most impactful big man today.

Secondly, kind of a wonky starting lineup today, and it surprisingly didn’t do too bad. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t good, but it wasn’t terrible. Keyonte, Dunn, Tech, Collins, Yurtseven.

Now let’s talk about tonight’s MVP, Collin Sexton. He started off terribly, going 1-6 his first 6 shots. Had bad turnovers, and wasn’t able to get anything going the first half. It wasn’t until about 2 minutes left in the 3rd quarter that he started to get going. He hit the closest buzzer beating layup I’ve ever seen to end the quarter, and was our entire offense the last 6 minutes of the fourth quarter. Our offense stalled when he didn’t have the ball, which is probably the first time I’ve ever said that about Sexton. Unreal shotmaking and great decision making for Sexton on both ends. He finished with 16 points, 6 assists, only 2 turnovers, 5-13 shooting, 3-8 from 3. That second half was electric from him.

Our second most impactful player is Walker Kessler. He came off the bench and only played 21 minutes, and had 11 points, 11 rebounds (6 offensive!!!0, and 2 blocks. 5 fouls in those 21 minutes isn’t too good, but again, it wasn’t until the start of the fourth quarter where Kessler started to get going. He had 9 of his 11 points in the fourth, and the players (Olynyk, THT, Keyonte, Sexton) were all looking for him on drives in the dunkers spot. Welcome back Sheriff!

John Collins had a pretty good game as well. He kind of looked clunky to start the game offensively, and when he got out of his own head and played naturally he played pretty good. 5-11 shooting, 9 rebounds, 1 block in 23 minutes. He did have 3 turnovers which I would’ve loved to have seen cleaned up, and he only had 3 points in the second half, but that’s about it for his negatives.

Keyonte George only made 3 pointers tonight, going 4-9 from beyond the arc. 0-4 from inside, which is something I’d love to see improvement on. He was missing layups and floaters, but at least his 3 was falling. He had one of his worst games turnover-wise tonight, with 5 turnovers. He finished with 15 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, all in 26 minutes. He made some good passes, but also looked like he struggled reading passing lanes, which led to more turnovers than he usually has. He looks like he has great timing on his lobs, which I’m sure Kessler & John Collins will appreciate.

Kris Dunn got the start, and I thought he looked really good. He plays off of Keyonte really well, and shot 4-7 from the field, had 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, but 2 turnovers to cap off an 8 point night. He played the least amount of minutes on the team tonight, and I don’t know why. In my eyes he is still the better option out of him and THT.

I was surprised Omer Yurtseven got the start instead of Olynyk, but I think it worked out well. It allowed Kessler & Yurtseven to play with other stretch bigs in Collins and Olynyk. Omer caught a nasty lob from Keyonte which was a big highlight tonight. He finished with 6 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 blocks. 3-6 shooting, 0-3 from the arc. He did a good job defensively on Jonas Valanciunas, which is all you can ask.

Fontecchio got the start today over Agbaji, which is something I’ve been wanting. I feel like he played really well, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him continue to start over Agbaji. 10 points, 2-7 from 3, 1-1 from inside the arc, 3 rebounds, 2 turnovers, 1 block in 25 minutes. He was pretty quiet the second half, but I liked how he wasn’t hesitant to let it fly from deep.

Kelly Olynyk played really well paired with Kessler. 13 points, 4-6 shooting, 3-3 from deep, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 3 turnovers in 24 minutes. Led the team in +/- with +10. He had a big alley oop pass to Kessler which was a beauty. I love seeing the bigs play off of each other. One unique thing about Olynyk that I think is an extremely underrated skillset, is that he is able to be the PnR ball handler and make good reads. It is hard to stop when you have two 6’11"+ guys running a PnR.

THT didn’t look bad tonight. He had a decent second half, and benefited form Sexton going off. THT shot the least amount of shots on the team tonight with just 5 shots, going 2-5, 1-3 from 3. 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 turnovers to go with 5 points.

Agbaji has impressed me the last two games by being more aggressive on offense. 3-8 shooting, 2-7 from 3, 9 points, 3 assists, 3 steals, 1 rebound tonight. I don’t think he impacted Brandon Ingram too much, but his impact was more noticeable on a team level, if that makes sense. I think he elevates the team defensively when he is on the floor. He was active in passing lanes, and hunting for the ball.

Such a big win, highlighted by that insane comeback in the fourth quarter.

5-11! We snap our 4 game losing skid!

  • GAME NOTES:

Such a solid game all around on multiple facets. Firstly, we were able to hit shots consistently, throughout the whole game. 54/51/71 shooting as a team tonight off of 32 assists. Everybody was getting involved, and we never looked back after outscoring the Grizzlies 42-19 in the first quarter. Big rebounding night, and although we had 21 turnovers, our shooting and defense made up for it.

Let’s start off individual performances with the biggest question mark this season: Walker Kessler. After a dominating performance last game, he came out slow, sluggish, and just off with everything. He was the only starter with a - plus/minus, with -13 in 18 minutes. 1-4 shooting, 2-4 from the line, 3 rebounds 2 blocks 4 points. He was going up super weak around the rim, and got blocked or just straight up missed easy “gimme” shots. He’s just a sophomore, so I’m giving him a lot of slack. But I was really hoping he’d get back to his last season form after last game

Next, let’s talk about the best player tonight in my eyes, Kelly Olynyk. A staggering +38 in 26 minutes. 14 points, 8 rebounds (3 oReb) 5 assists 1 steal. He was looking to score, hitting 5-7 & 3-4 from 3. He’s always shifty with his passes, and just looked so good out there. I said this a few games ago, but I think it would be best if Olynyk started at C. It would free up Collins to not just sit in the corner, and help Markkanen with floor spacing. It would move Kessler to the bench, where he can play C with one of Olynyk/Markkanen/Agbaji/Collins at PF. I would like to see it happen, but I don’t want to shake the confidence of Kessler even moreso.

Lauri tonight just showed he is a top 25 player in the league. Although he didn’t do anything too crazy, all of his looks came super easy to him. It didn’t look like he was bothered by Memphis at all. 19 points, 11 rebounds, 6-11 shooting 4-6 from 3, all in 28 minutes.

John Collins continues to look good. His 3pt shooting has been a surprise, as it was the biggest worry for me when we traded for him. 2-5 from 3 tonight, 5-12 shooting with 16 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. His double-double streak ends at 4 straight. He did have a nice alley oop from Clarkson in the first, and I believe another in the third. Great game from Collins. If he can continue being a 16-8 guy, that trade is going to look great.

Clarkson bounced back majorly after his terrible 2-10 outing last game. 8-13, 4-6 from 3, 20 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, all in 26 minutes. 3 turnovers were his only negative marks in my eyes. He looked great, especially considering the absolutely dreadful game he was coming off of.

Talen Horton-Tucker. I still don’t know how to feel about him. 23 minutes tonight, 9 points on 4-8 shooting (4-5 inside the arc, 0-3 from 3), 5 rebounds, 7 assists, but 5 turnovers. It is so intriguing how much of a rollercoaster watching him is. One minute he hits a nice handing reverse layup, then he chucks an ill-advised stepback 3 which he bricks. He always looks like he is trying to do too much out there which is frustrating. He did have some nice moments though, but overall I’m still not impressed.

Sexton had a big game. Hopefully this is his catapult game to propel him to normalcy. 23 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds in 22 minutes. He was also a +22 tonight. He shot well, going 8-10 (4-6 from 3), nailing all 3 free throws. He was looking to attack, and his two turnovers weren’t an issue with how well he played tonight. This is an outlier performance for him, but if he can go back to 16p/5a I’m happy.

Agbaji needs some offensive consistency. 2-5 shooting, all of them from deep for 6 points 3 rebounds in 18 minutes. 2 turnovers. I really hoped he would take a step this year and be our head defensive stopper with serviceable offense, but it just hasn’t happened. Again, just a sophomore, but I want to see more from him.

Keyonte George took a nasty fall off an alley oop attempt, but got up fine thankfully. He finished with 9 points, 3 assists in 23 minutes. 4-8 shooting, 1-4 from 3. Although his 3 didn’t fall this game, it was encouraging to see him attack the rim and shoot 3-4 from inside the arc.

Dunn seems to be losing the guard ratrace, playing just 13 minutes all in garbage time. 5 points 3 assists (0 TO).

No Hendricks, no Sensabaugh in a blowout victory.

Hardy played the zone a bit after we built the lead up, and I’m actually starting to come around to it. The scheme seems sound, the execution not so much. It is a 3-2 zone, which is surprising in the modern NBA, but we are having Markkanen be the top perimeter defender, and he easily switches out to the wing on screens or off-ball movement. In theory, his length will disrupt passes, but in execution not so much. I actually hope we stick with it and pull it out when needed. In watching the Spurs/Suns game last night, it looked like Popovich did the same thing with Wemby. a 3-2 zone with Wemby at the top perimeter defender. I don’t have the stats for it but it’ll be interesting to see how it progresses for us.

Another interesting note, coming into tonight we were the worst ranked half-court team in terms of differential at -21.4. However, tonight our halfcourt offense and defense was insane. I’ll try to pull the stats in time for next game.

2-3! Big team & morale victory.

EDIT: It appears Hendricks and Sensabaugh were ineligible to play due to them being on G-League assignment per Andy Larsen

  • GAME NOTES:

This game was a lot more competitive than I thought. Credit to Will Hardy for a good defensive scheme after getting cooked the first half. Murray cooked us the first quarter, and was pretty much a nonfactor the rest of the game. We really limited their stars, and allowed Gordon and their bench to beat us. We finally moved away from that god awful zone (THANK YOU HARDY!!!)

Walker Kessler has arrived!!! In a game where I thought he would continue to slump (going against the best player in the league), he actually held his own and was able to get going both offensively and defensively. 22 points, 13 rebounds, 9-10 shooting, 1 block. I hope he is able to use this as a catapult for the rest of the season.

Overall big game for our big men. Our starting 3, 4, and 5 combined for 64 points 37 rebounds. Besides those 3, our team didn’t do much outside of THT and Sexton.

Credit to Lauri for being unstoppable. He continues to shoot the 3 really well, 5-13 from 3. 27 points 14 rebounds 5 assists in 38 minutes. He is proving he is a #1 option. I wish that in the final minutes he demands the ball more. Clarkson was shooting too poorly to be handling the ball the majority of our “clutch” time minutes. I’d rather give the ball to Lauri on a switch and see what he can do. His next step is going to be creating for himself against any defender.

John Collins was used more in offensive sets which is what I’ve been begging for. 15 points, 10 rebounds, 1 assist 1 steal while shooting the second most field goals on the team. Although he was 7-16, I’m thankful he is getting touches and reps. He did have a bad goaltending call with less than a minute left, but an otherwise great game from him. He also continues his double-double streak, having earned one each game this season.

THT bounced back majorly as well. 16 points, 8 assists to 1(!) turnover. 29 minutes, 7-12 shooting, 2-3 from 3. He didn’t look clunky out there, and looked great. I love how the last two games he has been taking care of the ball. I still think he shouldn’t be our starting PG, but I’m glad he had a good game.

Sexton was our other highlight, 12 points 5-10 shooting, 2-5 from 3. No assists, no rebounds, no steals, no blocks, with just 1 turnover in 17 minutes. Still need to see him be more of a playmaker, but I’m glad his shot is falling.

Clarkson didn’t look good at all. 4 points, 2-10 shooting (one of them was in the last 15 minutes), 0-6 from 3, 0-3 from the free throw line. Buddy couldn’t buy a bucket with a million dollars it was that bad. Although he couldn’t see the rim, he had 6 assists, but had 5 turnovers. A very bad Jordan Clarkson game.

Kelly Olynyk is the soul of this team. Although he didn’t make a field goal, he had 5 assists, 3 steals, 4 rebounds. I think that he needs to get more minutes than just 18, although he was in fould trouble with 4 fouls. I love what he brings to the team.

Dunn, George, and Agbaji combined for 1-13, 1-7 from 3, 5 assists and 5 rebounds. Just 3 points, contributed by Keyonte. It is encouraging to see George get the most minutes off the bench with 20, but just a really rough game for those 3. No turnovers though for any of them is a plus.

Dunn only played 6 minutes all game, and seems to be the biggest loser in the PG sweepstakes. We are going from THT to Keyonte with little overlap.

I’m surprised that this game was as close as it was. Jokic did his own thing, but we really limited the two man game, which is crazy considering Murray finished with 18 and 14, and Jokic finished with 27-10-11. It didn’t feel like they beat us, which is somewhat encouraging.

3 +'s of the game: Kessler, THT, moving away from that terrible zone.

3 -'s of the game: Agbaji/Dunn/George terrible shooting night, Clarkson continues to turn the ball over, interior D gave up 68 points.

    Oh well.

    1-3 on the season.

  • GAME NOTES:

We are 3 games in and I am sick and tired of that stupid zone that Hardy is trying. It didn’t work against the Kings, and it didn’t work tonight. Multiple times it led to KD being guarded by Keyonte George, Kris Dunn, THT, Sexton, or Clarkson. For a team with a lot of length, why aren’t we using it??? If it didn’t go to KD, it went to Eubanks or Nurk who caught in at the free throw line and had a head of steam going into a layup. Worst defensive scheme I’ve seen from Hardy.

Not a lot of redeeming plays from tonight.

Lauri of course played well, especially in the first half. He ended with 19 points in 28 minutes. 5-7 from 3, 7-13 from the field. He didn’t take advantage of a smaller defender, which is what the Suns were throwing at him.

Keyonte was another high note. 12 points, not the best shooting with 4-12 and 2-8 from 3, but 7 rebounds and 6 assists. He had two turnovers where he dribbled the ball of his leg on both of them, but he played the most minutes of everybody tonight. He definitely needs to start.

THT is ass. 1-7 shooting, 4 points, somehow no turnovers but I don’t believe that. 4 fouls in 16 minutes. Absolutely ugly game. 2-4 from the free throw line…

Fontecchio looked good late when the game was already over. 3-5 from 3, 5-7 from the floor with 13 points.

Sexton was our second best guard tonight with 14 points 5 assists 2 turnovers in 22 minutes. He still doesn’t look good out there though. He had a strong 7 point first quarter, but dropped off in production afterwards.

Clarkson played very sloppy. 7 points 5 turnovers 3-10 shooting. C’mon man.

Agbaji looks like he got injured. He challenged a Eubanks shot and immediately held his right knee. He stayed in, but it didn’t look too good. He didn’t play at all the second half.

Such an ugly game. Nothing to comment on besides the TERRIBLE DEFENSIVE SCHEME. I love Hardy but c’mon man. I didn’t know what I watched.

    1-2…

  • GAME NOTES:

Holy hell was our zone defense absolutely dreadful tonight. We allowed Harrison Barnes to go 9-10 in the first half for like 26 points, mainly off of wide open corner 3’s. We were giving up so many open looks and the Kings just weren’t missing. The Kings ended up shooting 18-49 from 3.

Kind of a disappointing game in a number of ways. Our frontcourt didn’t look coherent, and Lauri really struggled the first quarter. Kessler was a nonfactor, Collins sat in the corner all game, and it was just an ugly game. Credit to Sabonis and the Kings quick rotations and defense for throwing our bigs off their rhythm.

Lauri ended up with 18 points on 15 shots, going 6-15. 10 rebounds though. He looked like he was hunting for some looks, and maybe wasn’t letting it flow through him. But in my opinion, that falls mainly on our guards for not setting him up the best. He did have a great alley-oop from THT. I do like that he was aggressive in shot hunting, it just wasn’t falling tonight.

Speaking of our guards, it’s a bad sign if Jordan Clarkson is the leading assist man. THT did not look good offensively, 8 points, 3-9 shooting. 4 assists, 1 turnover, but man I was so disappointed he started and ended up with 22 minutes. Lots of ugly basketball when he had the ball unfortunately.

Clarkson was our leading scorer with 24 points on 8-16 shooting. Like I mentioned above, 6 assists which led the team tonight. It took him a little to get going too, but he looks improved from last year. He is looking to pass out of drives when the defense collapses, which isn’t something that we are used to. He is so much fun to watch, and he seems to have passed his bad shot selection to THT.

Will Hardy ran some interesting lineups. He ran a lot of 3 guard lineups, Ochai, and a big man. We countered their stretch lineup by playing Olynyk at C, and even Lauri at C for some time in the 4th. It was actually decently effective in getting us points and stopping them from scoring. We saw lineups like these in the preseason, I was surprised Hardy whipped it out so soon.

Kris Dunn didn’t look too good tonight either. Our entire guard lineup was pretty iffy tonight. 16 minutes, 8 points, 4 turnovers to just 2 assists, and a team low -16. He was also postered by Malik Monk…

Agbaji didn’t light up the scoreboard, and scoreboard watching you’d say he was pretty much a non-factor. But he looks so beefy. He’s built, and he was giving the Kings some trouble. He resorted to his role from last season of mainly spot up shooting, which is different from what we saw in the preseason where he was making an effort to drive and be more involved. He finished with 5 points, 3 rebounds on 2-6 shooting.

Kessler was given trouble by everybody. Javale McGee, Domas Sabonis, anybody. He was the second worse on the team in terms of ±, with -14. 8 points, 8 rebounds, 1 block. He was a nonfactor tonight.

I want to see John Collins more involved in the offense. Too many times he was used in the dunkers spot, or just sat in the corner. 13 points 9 rebounds for him though. I just want to see more in the roller spot from him, but I don’t know how it will work next to a guy like Kessler. He was a nonfactor the second half, only scoring 4 points, all less than 4 minutes left in the game.

Kelly Olynyk was the best big for us tonight IMO. Again, didn’t light up the scoreboard, but he just seems to do a bit of everything. 5 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists. I think he fits the needs of this team nicely.

Sexton was just as brutal as THT tonight. 2-9 shooting, 9 points, 3 rebounds, 0 assists, 3 turnovers, 3 fouls. C’mon man. I love Sexton, but it is so frustrating seeing him throw this opportunity away. I was hoping he would take a leap forward in his playmaking and claim the starting spot. But man. 20 minutes of nothing out there.

Lastly, Keyonte George. His first basket was an and-1 goaltended layup, but his first real made shot (besides the free throw) was a 3 pointer. He had one bad pass in the 4th, but he was part of our 4th quarter rotation. 8 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists in 19 minutes.

We saw garbage time minutes from Yurtseven, Sensabaugh, Hendricks, Fontecchio, and Samanic. Fontecchio was the only one who scored.

I think that this game will be a good reality check for a lot of fans. The Kings are a great team, and showed it tonight. We just couldn’t keep up. Pair that with some iffy defensive schemes, and it’s a wrap. It also shows that we can’t rely on Sexton, THT, or Dunn to be our PG. We need a solid option if we want to try to get above .500

To me, we mainly beat ourselves with terrible 3 point shooting. 9-28, compared to 19-51 from the Kings. We gave them any shot they wanted, and we struggled to get ours. We won the fastbreak battle, the rebound battle, and the foul game, but just couldn’t disrupt their shots like they were to us.

    0-1 bitches. See you Friday
