It’s not just rebounding though is it, it’s his lack of screen assists, his pathetically bad ‘contested shots’ percentages. His 30% 3p%. Let’s be honest folks, if all he can do is run up the court very fast… He just doesn’t need to be on it.

Not reacting to the game, as I have not seen it yet. But I do know that Toppin needs to play better if he is going to be considered the long term 4. And I can tell you now, he isn’t. There is no way that a power forward who hardly gets screen assists, rebounds or contested shots is going to survive in the league.

At this point you might as well give those minutes to Jarace Walker. Toppin’s already getting fewer and fewer minutes and the writing is on the wall for him. If all you bring to the table is running at the opponent’s basket and finishing some flashy alley-oops than you just don’t need to be considered an NBA player. And that is frustrating as fuck, he’s got all the physical tools to be a really competent power forward, but he just doesn’t seem to put it together.

  • Nembhard was instrumental tonight, he’s like the ultimate glue guy. That second unit at the end of the first quarter made the difference and it was because Andrew directed both offense and defense. Such a huge difference with TJ. Don’t get me wrong, I love TJ and know he just had an off-week, but he just can’t have that impact on defense in the same way Nembhard can due to his size.

  • You are on to something here, since posting this and reading the replies I have been wondering…

The atrocious defensive rating is the result of the enormous pace we play at. I need to sit down and understand how these stats are calculated, but it is obvious that if we get a shot off within ten seconds, more often than not, we will then also pay at the other end. Running in transition instead of crashing the boards has that effect.

I’d love to see a breakdown of those stats (based on total possessions per game).

  • I didn’t want to write it down as a weakness, because there is no guarantee Herb will still be the owner, but in a couple of years we need to decide what to pay Mathurin and Nembhard. If both of them develop into solid starters I can see Mathurin wanting near the max and Nembhard similar to Nesmith. That would put the cat amongst the pigeons when it comes to our salary cap. I don’t think we’ll hit tax, but if we get a guy like OG on a (near) max…

  • Thanks :) Yeah I agree that the offense is a strength. I didn’t include it because I still regard it as subject to a regression to the mean. Let me put it this way, if we keep up this offensive pace all year then Haliburton has to be in the conversation for MVP top 3, certainly for MiP and Carlisle for CotY. I’d love to see it, but I can’t bank it yet…
