It depends. There are many cosmetics that you can purchase with ‘renown’ which is the free in game currency you eat by playing, but there are also plenty of them that can only be purchased with ‘R6 coin’ which can only be obtained by spending real money. Some of the most popular cosmetics are ‘elite’ skins, which come with a fancy animation that plays if you finish as MVP, and these are ridiculously priced.

Not to mention, there is a loot box system known as ‘alpha packs’ you may be tempted to buy initially, but they aren’t worth it to buy with payed currency I promise you. You earn enough by playing. There are also limited event variants of these packs. You’re generally able to earn 1-3 of these through challenges within the event for free, but over the years they have added so much filler content to these, it can be very tempting to buy more in hopes you get the skin you want.

Lastly, there’s battle pass system with a premium option. A lot of great cosmetics within it usually, but there isn’t a full currency pay back at any point of the pass’ completion, unlike some other games.

The game is amazing in my opinion. One of a kind. But if you’ve got a problem with overspending, I can’t lie it’s not the friendliest with in game purchases.
