Your clone is only a copy of you at first, the more it experiences, the more different it becomes. That’s going to cause issues eventually. They may even start working against you.

The solution is The Prestige.

The clone only exists long enough to complete a task or fulfill a purpose, but then one of us (and we don’t know which) is gonna get dropped through a trap door and drowned when we’re done.

Legitimately, if they were still making them with half as much focus on content as they were in the first 5 generations, I’d have no issue paying for the “same game” with new Pokemon every few years.

It’s that the price went up but the actual quality of the product went down. GameFreak used to give a shit and put real effort into them, then the lead director left and was replaced with the current one, and they entered this spiral of formulaic mediocrity every 2 years with increasingly diminishing returns, all the while slowly chipping away at player agency.

I feel like that has been the case but lately there have been more proper next-gen exclusives that even I, who drags my feet on next gen consoles, am putting aside some cash for PS5. Up until now I didn’t feel the need, but between Spiderman and FF7, I think it’s time.

I feel like I reached that point much earlier in the last console generations than I did in this one. Maybe that has to do with the speed of development being so much slower nowadays.

Also the fact Microsoft just doesn’t seem to respect that the user is the admin, not them. You can still claw back control, but over the years, the amount of clawing you have to do has increased.

To put it simply, I hate when my OS does something I explicitly told it not to do, or undoes something I deliberately set. And as the years have gone by, the amount of times that happens with Windows has skyrocketed.

That’s how I feel about making the move to Linux, personally. That sense of overwhelming relief to be free of something you hate so much is a reward. That’s why I put in the effort to manage Linux. Being free of Microsoft’s (and Apple and Google) shit is something I want so much that I’ll not only put in the time, I’ll even enjoy it somewhat.

Not to defend Discord, by the way. It’s fucking terrible and I despise this trend of telling people to come to your little private clubhouse to learn more about your software so I can sort through a bunch of obnoxious gif and image spam, while using an absolutely terrible search engine.

That would go to shit immediately. The sheer level of moderation that would be required to prevent that from being abused and corrupted would be insane, and then that kind of moderation would in turn invalidate the whole project because the moderation itself would have its own biases.

But it especially wouldn’t work in a federated space. Are you suggesting that people can just open their own instance of that? If there are multiple different instances for this kind of thing, that’s even more abusable.

Part of the reason Wikipedia works is it is centralized, relatively neutral, and you need sources on facts. It’s run by people that adhere to a strict standard, and everyone that contributes is required to adhere to that exact same standard.

What would be the scholarly criteria for the sort of thing that you’re talking about? What is the standard? And how do you enforce that standard in a federated space?

Because if it’s anything like how federation works around Lemmy, there can be no standard. Instances are going to do whatever they like based on the biases of each admin, which undermines the entire concept.

Yeah but we’re not talking about niche interests subs, we’re talking about discussions of movies and stuff. They’re really basic, really standard, and really popular things for an internet forum to have. They were a norm long before Digg and Reddit, and they were routinely some of the most trafficked and active posts on Reddit.

You would think that the first communities and the first norms to really take root and grow here would be the most basic. It’s kind of weird how after 7 months there just hasn’t been any real establishment of them.

I mean, that was never seriously in doubt. The days of massive site migrations happening overnight are long over.

What matters is the momentum.

Use your Android phone as example. You don’t notice many restrictions there too and it hides the complex stuff successfully for normal users. Rooting has become a thing of the past for most users and everything works as it should.

This does not inspire confidence. The restrictions imposed on Android’s storage, and the hoops you have jump through to get around them, make using my device more frustrating.

You’re describing a more restricted file system than even Windows has.

Also because it’s locking another aspect of the device behind software that you do not have control over, which gives carriers and phone manufacturers some new levers to exact control over how and what you do.

You’re leaving out the context that the time limit should be way longer given how long previous versions of Windows have been supported. Ending Windows 10 support when they are is a deliberate effort to force adoption of Windows 11 and avoid the embarrassment of Windows 8’s failure. They learned it’s better to scare users into compliance than to actually attract them with well developed, feature rich software. The hardware requirements just make it more egregious.

Stop giving Microsoft the benefit of the doubt, they have demonstrated more than enough times they don’t deserve it. This is them strong arming users into doing something they don’t want to do, and it should be rightfully called out for what it is: shitty.

Probably around the time developers to start requiring W11. That TPM requirement is going to be abused to hell and back.
