I laugh when people say that the NA is more reliable then say 190hp is perfectly adequate when the 229hp is barely that much more when the 190hp is achieved by wringing the ever living shit out of the NA to merge onto the highway when the turbo achieves that without even breaking a sweat because it has something like 70% more torque.

  • I’m about as big a Mazda fan as any if you guys have read my posts. I’m constantly defending them where it matters. But this article’s a big load of fluff. There are no artisans with robes and hair buns lovingly assembling the car or hand crafting an inspection guide sheet in the QC Dept.

They’re a mass manufacturing car company like any other. I’ve engineered mass manufacturing components for commercial industry that involved tens of thousands of components a year, consumer that’s millions of components, and medtech that makes implants for a single person. It’s all the same. There are a set of regulations and guidelines and if you do your job right, they will all statistically come out according to spec.

Where it always goes wrong is leadership driving things the right way for the bottom line.

    You could.

Run a radar detector, laser jammer, Waze for backup, company sponsored lawyer service on retainer, know the techniques for leap frogging and letting the person a mile down the road trigger any speed traps, mind your tire conditions and pressure, get a job with an early shift so you leave when no one else is on the road, and have a very very understanding wife.

But… that still doesn’t explain your terrible gas mileage. Have you tried going out on a weekend, find a long stretch of interstate, and set the cruise control at exactly 65mph for 1 hour, to see what your MPG’s are?

I drive like an asshole in my CX-50 turbo. Like, I’m usually doing 90-110mph in the early mornings. Lately with the winter blend, I’m averaging around 18-19mpg highway. In the evenings, I’m going with traffic 65-85mph and I’m averaging like 26-27mpg. Overall, I’m getting 23-24mpg.

If your route is 95% highway average 55mph, there is no way it’s that bad unless you left your car in sport mode or something. Like… sometimes I go for long drives to put the baby to sleep, and if i’m on the highway cruising at 55-60mph, I get 31-32mpg.
