Anytime I see someone talking about how much they hate Tyreek, I question whether they’d have the same opinion of him if his skin were white. Does that mean every one of the anti-Tyreek voices is racist? No, of course not, but there’s a whole lot of “he needs to just be quiet” undertones that you often hear from white people about Black people.

I suspect he’s a complicated guy, like all of us, who has done things that are entirely unacceptable, and who has aspects of his personality that are truly loveable. The guys who know him best don’t seem to have a problem with him using his leverage to get paid or the fact that he says silly shit on his podcast and social media to get attention.

  • The big difference between football and basketball (or baseball) is the short season. Each game is equal to roughly 5 NBA games or 10 MLB games (a little less since they went to the 17 game schedule).

Stats become less instructive as sample sizes go down. Also, NFL teams don’t just go out and try to run up the scoreboard every time out - they become more conservative when they get a lead, they throw more when they fall behind, etc. A QB’s job isn’t to thrown for 400 yards/4 TDs; rather, it’s to put his team in a position to win. Sometimes that means a bunch of flashy stats, and sometimes that means hanging on to the ball and not taking risks.

While DVOA is helping to smooth out some of the challenges of comparing players in different contexts, the bottom line in the NFL is wins and losses, especially at the QB position, and it’s not entirely unfair to frame a QB’s performance in those terms for the reasons I mentioned here (among others).

  • Great point. I think it’s as much on Veach as it is on Pat - will Veach be able to keep a championship-level team around Patrick Mahomes throughout his career the way Belichick did for Brady in New England? Complicating things is the Andy question: when will he retire? Will he stay throughout Pat’s career? If not, is Matt Nagy (or whoever replaces Andy) going to be able to maintain continuity?

Brady had a lot working in his favor on the road to becoming the undisputed GOAT. He won the Super Bowls so it’s hard to argue against him but no QB has ever been as lucky as Brady.
