Oh yea the team faced a lot of diversity last year. No doubt about it. Heck we were just over .500 before the Kyrie trade.

I just have a hard time seeing what Kidd has done on the job. He feels like a coach who lucked into a star player. Like what has he done aside from let Luka and Kyrie cook? It’s hard for me to tell.

At the same time everything you just described happened last year and we missed the play in.

Yes we are 20% into this season but the same problems are worse. Rebounding and defense. Obviously we aren’t going to fix all of the roster or even most but improvement somewhere is important. Lively speaks to Nico and the scouts not to Kidd.

I have hard time believing a coach that can develop young players, make adjustments and/or have somewhat of a playbook couldn’t get better results than what we are seeing.

I think the mentality of we can’t panic also leads to Kidd not being held accountable for honestly not doing much on anything. (Whether he’s capable or not.) The roster isn’t complete but that does not give Kidd a pass.

He’s a Hall of Fame championship winning player but also a coach who is 13 games over .500 while having all but one season with either Giannis or Luka.

    It’s fair to be critical.

  • I like this breakdown. Thanks for putting it together. I’m going to throw another name out there. Jalen Smith from the Pacers.

Hes not a star or standout but hes okay defensively and rebounds well. Guys like him would benefit from Luka/Kyrie. He’d add some size.

He’s dropped down the depth chart. Nesmith took over his spot last year and they picked up Toppin. Not a lot of minutes for guys his size on the Pacers right now.

Carlisle might be enticed by one of the players he used to coach. (Maybe Dwight & a 2nd or a THJ/Dwight for Hield/Smith)

Jalen could be a cost effective, upside player with some size to pickup who fits our timeline.

  • We are in that transition period of building something more sustainable long term. We are transitioning out of the vets and into more youth.

Lively, Omax and Hardy are great young pieces we’ve never really had in my time as a Mavs fan. Grant is a glue guy who can teach guys how to defend. (Hence all the talking hehe) Powell/Maxis days are numbered but I still appreciate them out performing their projections in their careers.

We have gaps but they can be sorted out over the next couple of years. This year is about taking some fliers on different players and seeing who we give a slightly better, tradable contract in the future(DJJ/Exum). Holmes is more a salary filler. Green is younger with a tradable contract.

We needed better flexibility in our salary matching ability for trades. We have more of that now. Nico is well known in the player community and I would not be surprised if we get a great sign and trade player in the future.

Kyrie is great, he helps Luka stay fresher longer into the season. Luka can develop his game more learning to play off ball a little. He’s also a 6’2 guard on the wrong side of 30 (albeit with fresher legs) so he doesn’t fit our long term goal. I see him as a nice stop gap that eventually gets flipped for more when a team is ready to over pay and we’ve developed other playmakers.

Luka is amazing and anyone who says otherwise is a dope. He gets better every year. We haven’t even seen everything he so capable of. Improvement on athleticism and defense are showing. If we put a competitive roster around him he could run the league for years and years. He excels with any type of player.

Overall I feel so much better about this roster than I did at the end of last season. I felt so pessimistic and downtrodden. I have to give it to Nico, he’s done a great job of revamping and working toward a more sustainable competitive roster going forward.

Also DFS should retire a Mav.

  • I think some combo of Drummond/Caruso/Pat from the bulls would be great.

Jonathon Isaac from the Magic would be good as well. He’s crazy but his skill set matches what we need.

Gallinari from the Wizards would be a cheaper option too.

I think we make a minor/mid trade after Dec 15 and then next offseason we see something bigger. A sign and trade scenario, return for Thybulle/Ayton etc…

The league is trending back to size. The teams we are going to face in the playoffs have that. Denver was good example of this. We can be out rebounded and bullied. Lively is the guy but he’s not enough to fix our problem. A good vet like Vuc who we could package for someone else later doesn’t sound bad to me.
