I’d argue it wouldn’t even be a fraudulent 9-2. If Payton could get Winston and Taysom and literally everyone except Ian Book to have a winning record, he could kill it with Carr.

As frustrated as I am with Carr, he’s not untalented. He’s scared and makes atrocious decisions, yea. But if he had a coach that designed schemes away from his weaknesses, he’d be well above average.

Unfortunately, Pete’s “scheme” is “go be Drew Brees”. He does nothing to help Carr. That being said, I still think Carr is a limited player and a shitty teammate. But Payton would find a way to maximize his strengths instead of putting his weaknesses on full blast every week.

This is a really insightful comment. Like, on one hand, it’s hard to expect Carr to come in and be the leader of the team in 8 months. On the other hand, from a distance, it seems like he’s done the opposite of that and is alienating teammates. I will say that before Olave died yesterday, I thought Carr was genuinely showing a rapport with him like they went through some shit and have come out the other side stronger… but who knows.

If I were to make a Dennis Allen coach in Football Manager, he would have 0 charisma and 0 leadership. The scale goes up to 20. He has no business being a head coach. Clearly, he has some technical aptitude. Great! Stick to that! Don’t sour the whole team with your 1993 Ramada Inn motivational speeches.

As far as the offense identity… I couldn’t agree more. Like, what the fuck are we even trying to be? We can’t run the ball without Taysom or gadgetry, we can’t throw the ball deep if Shaheed is off the field, we never attack the middle of the field, Juwan is a fraud, we don’t utilize our receivers’ strengths (no slants with slant boy, no option routes with Kamara, etc.)… what are we even trying to cultivate? Yes, our line is shit. We know this. Our response? Bang runs up the middle and run 4 verts which takes forever to develop… like… the worst possible choices. How fucking stupid can you be??

  • Some people can do but not teach. If something just comes naturally to you, but you don’t know how to explain it to someone else, you’ll probably be a pretty bad coach.

Others can teach but not do. It’s easy for them to understand what is happening and what should happen and convey that to someone else, but they might not have the physical ability to go execute that themselves. You’ll probably see at least a few career backup QB’s each week now as offensive coordinators or offensive assistants for this very reason.

  • It not so much that it has taken time to “mesh” (if that is what we are assuming/hoping is happening now)… it’s how absolutely braindead they’ve looked outside of the last game (against a poor defense, at that). From the coaching mentality, to the playcalling, to the personnel usage, to the Carring, to the Olaveing… they’ve looked less organized, disciplined, and coherent than a high school JV offense.

I certainly hope this is the turning point and the start of much better things… but it’s hard to be truly optimistic given the first 7 games we all had the displeasure of watching.
