I am a steam deck user, i love steam OS, it allows me to game even though I became a dad. I love how fast sleep/wake is, love trackpads and extra buttons. Now what I dont love is the screen, I am an OLED lover, I used OLED for PS5 and PC, so steam deck screen looks really bad in comparison so I decided I would upgrade to an OLED, however now I am thinking should I consider asus or lenovo hendhelds? I hated windows on SD, I had dual boot on 2 TB but ended up formating and leaving Steam OS only, I also hate the fact that asus and lenovo dont have trackpads, however I am tempted by extra performance. SD is great for back logs and indi games but modern AAA titles not ao much. Would like to know your thoughts, what would you get SD oled or something else? PS. I will be selling or giving away my current SD, so buying Ally and keeping SD as well is not an option, also forget about price difference, I know SD is better bang for buck but is Ally or Go any better of priced the same ?
I ordered the SD OLED and while waiting for it to arrive I have been wondering if should have tried the Lenovo Go instead. But thinking about it now while the Lenovo Go seems intriguing, I am more interested to see the next interation of the product… Like I passed the OG SD and only picked SD after it got refined now.
All in all I hope all of these handhelds do well to keep competition and innovation alive and well while tech also hopefully still takes leaps forward to allow more performance with the same power levels.
Or get a Lenovo Legion Go and stick Bazzite on it. That’s the dilemma I’m facing
I’m going to give a different opinion to the norm
I like the ROG Ally because of the performance improvement and the VRR 1080p screen is great. VRR is a underated feature where you can leave frame rate uncapped and it looks smooth. The Ally also has less input lag as there is no proton later or V Sync enabled. I find the position of the D Pad better for fighting games as well as 2D games. The speakers are also best in market. It doesn’t have the smooth sleep mode as Deck but if you enable hibernate you get something that’s decent enough and works with 90 percent of games. Windows interface is surprisingly good, you can use Armory Crate or Steam Big picture mode. The touchscreen is more responsive and Windows is way better on Ally than Deck. The fan noise is also way quieter on Ally compared to Deck on 15w. Ally fan noise is quiet all the way to 20w. Being able to do mods, play from any store and have no comparability issues is great. Everything just works.
The only main issue is battery life where Deck is the king of battery life so if that’s important to you definitely get the Deck. But if you plan to play plugged in around the house the Ally is a no brainer. You can grab a bargain now I bought mine used for the same price as a OLED Deck 500gb, but my Ally was preinstalled with 1tb SSD. Another thing I forgot to mention is Ally has issues with SD card stop working. But there is a easy mid where you can install a full size SSD drive on the cheap. Opening up an Ally and installing an SSD is even easier than a Deck. There are people who have installed 4TB SSDs.
Thamks for your take on this, will consider.
SD OLED! the software support, OS and long-term commitment is important for me. Running windows on a handheld is just a bad taste in my mouth 🤮
Late to this party but I’m in the process of returning the Legion Go in favour of the Steam Deck.
I have a PS5 and play AAA titles on that, with Chiaki for ‘handheld mode’. SD was just easier and less faff, yes the LeGo is more powerful but the control layout just didn’t click and I found it uncomfortable to hold.
I had the LCD 512 for just over a year and I’m selling it upgrade to a 1TB OLED
I will probably start streaming from my PC
