Looking into it and realising I have no intention of upgrading to the OLED, it’s made me question what it would take for me to trade in my OG deck for an upgrade.

The big 3 for me would be Freesync, 90hz refresh rate (with VRR for lower speeds, 30, 60 and 90 would be a dream) and USB4 with eGPU support.

What about you guys?

For me it’s the bigger screen with higher res. The current OLED upgrade still has wasted black borders albeit smaller compared to original but its still there. i believe they can push their upgrade with the original steamdeck body with a fully bezel less screen and go at least 8" than just 7.4" because of those damn black borders

I am buying an OLED because I didn’t go for the steam deck originally but the improvements valve made are enormous

I do wish it had a few things:

    1. Obviously performance similar to the Legion Go / Ally but at the same Steam Deck 3-15 watt power limits. Hopefully AMD has some magic in 2025

    2. Even more internal physical space efficiency for even larger battery capacity

    3. 90hz VRR and more AMD magic with upscaling

    4. Larger right trackpad with better polling rate and accuracy

    5. slide up screen with keyboard under

Mine does everything I need it to. It’s going to take my deck no longer fulfilling that requirement for whatever reason.

Basically the ability to play games that I want to play but which I can’t play on the existing Deck.

eGPU with a nice dock that had that built in would be tempting. I play in docked mode more than handheld so if I could play new releases at 4K resolution and say 120hz that would have me considering it.

Also a second USB C port so I could easily hook up to a display or peripheral while plugging into a charger would be nice. Sometimes a dock is just too fiddly to deal with. I’d sometimes like to be able to play a game on my Deck but have the game on the TV so say my friends can see what’s going on. Or use it on a trip in a hotel room without bringing the Dock and a controller.

More power, and at the same price as the 64GB model was at launch.

The OLED seems great, and I really want it, but it’s just too much money, especially when my current Deck works just fine. I know I’d feel buyer’s remorse if I go and spend all of that money on it, and ultimately, it’s the same device that I’ve already got.

I would also seriously consider buying a Deck mini if it had all of the features of the OLED but at a pocketable size. It would be nice to be able to keep playing all of the same games in situations where it isn’t really socially acceptable to whip out a massive device from my bag.

For the moment, though, I’m waiting to see what Nintendo are doing. I know I’d feel shitty if I spent hundreds on a slightly revised version of something I already have only for them to announce their next console months later.

I actually wasn’t going to upgrade, I saw a bunch of posts about the OLED screen on here and that didn’t really matter that much to me. But yesterday I actually took a second to look at the steam website and see the specs for the new one. I bought the highest specced deck last year, and so comparing that to the new OLED one, I’ll get twice the memory (I already have too many microSD cards for it), a bigger battery (I almost exclusively play on battery), better wifi (which has been the biggest pain in the ass for me, I have almost gigabit wifi but I’m lucky to ever see speeds exceeding 100mbps), and then the OLED screen is just icing at that point.

I also damaged and need to replace both bumpers on my current steam deck, so I like the idea of just upgrading and then being able to fix this one and not worry if it takes me a couple of days or longer to get it done between work and life, and then sell it or maybe give it to a friend or family member for the upcoming holidays.

Plus, I’ve put at least like 800 hours on this deck since I got it, fuck after the next couple Netflix price hikes I’ll probably spend more per hour on Netflix than I did per hour for the deck (as someone who plays a lot more deck than watches Netflix, but still).

Bigger performance upgrade. This form factor is going to improve a lot over the years. This really isn’t one of the big ones. Although OLED is really nice.

I wonder if the Oled is so much better than an LCD with vibrant deck.

Egpu support with an official dock to give it more juice so that when you’re playing on a TV /monitor would be incredible. Maybe also the dock also allows the deck to be woken with a controller from your couch. Basically making the deck a more seamless experience like the Nintendo switch would be amazing.

But I’d upgrade for less, maybe in two years a version with a new chip that’s more powerful and efficient would be enough for me.

I’m in Australia, an unofficial market, and I just got my steam deck today. I use tcl ar oled glasses and will definitely not be looking at the updated deck. By the way, this thing is awesome!

I’ll be honest man. It took me a lot of money to buy this one. I am not selling shit at a loss. I’ll be running this deck into the ground before i buy another handheld.

Making money takes a lot of time and hard work. Not gonna throw them around like that.

It’s really not that big of an update, I’m surprised people are really considering spending another £500 for just a screen and some battery/efficiency changes.
