Well, to be fair, that was the original Steam Deck done at launch, and it actually was pretty rough at launch. IGN gave the OLED Steam Deck a 9, so it’s not as crazy as it looks on the surface.

I guess they rated it for what it was…? Like, the PSP (no wait that sounds wrong) - the PSPortal is a streaming handheld so they rated it as a streaming handheld while they rated the steam deck as a normal handheld. Still doesnt deserve a 7 but could explain it

I still don’t understand why Sony made the PS Portal so ugly. A Dualsense cut in half with a tablet shoved in the middle.

It’s an entirely different product line. It’s like you comparing review for PlayStation pro controller with that of the steam deck.

Is it way better in regards to input lag than a Steam Deck just streaming it?

The steamdecks firmware was genuinely ass when it was new. Felt like we were beta testing the thing

I feel like ign hasn’t been reputable, and I haven’t agreed with their reviews in a long time (10+ years). I love the hell outta my deck. It’s perfect for the older rpgs and indies imo. Laptop and ps5 do the heavy lifting. Saying that, I love my portal already. It does what it’s supposed to while being insanely comfortable to hold. Can deck do the same thing with chiaki? Yes. Is it a luxury item? Probably. The real take is that you shouldn’t compare apples to oranges.

Launch day SteamDeck was a hot mess. But it was new territory and as we can see definitely paid off and revived the handheld scene in the mainstream market.

Did you read/watch the reviews? Or did you just grab screenshots of scores and run over here?

    • The launch Steam Deck had a ton of issues, many of which are listed in that review.
    • There weren’t many verified games for Steam Deck at launch.
    • The Steam Deck has largely improved over time.
    • The PS Portal is the best in its class. That is to say, it offers the best remote play experience. Better than a phone, tablet, or even a Steam deck or other PC handhelds.

Either way, this post is disingenuous. You’re comparing the score an outlet gave to a streaming device to the score they gave to a handheld PC. It’s like comparing the score they gave an IPhone to the score they gave a gaming laptop. They are different things.

I know this is a shitpost but you realise context is a thing and things are reviewed under different lenses, and by different people?

I’ve been reading this sub since the Deck started shipping. I’ve seen the various crying about the Ally and the OLED Deck. But I’ve still held true that the Steam Deck fanbase is different to - and by different to, I mean better than - the cretinous teenagers that make up most gaming comment sections.

This post, and a lot of the comments, have swayed me from that notion. They’re every bit as idiotic as any Sony, Xbox or “PC Master Race” fanboy shitting up the internet.

However, it’s good to see that for every moron, there seem to be several more reasonable adults. So on the whole, while this post has lowered my opinion of the Deck base on the bottom end, it has reinforced that for the most part, we’re a more decent group than most gaming “factions.”

Its ign. They gave UFC 5 a 9/10… lost all credibility after that.
