  • No, absolutely not. I don’t give a shit about downvotes by fanboys here, please don’t listen to anybody saying it’s worth it if you’re Docked only.

The Steam Deck has a performance profile of a base PS4 when running games at 800p. At higher resolutions, PS4 actually performs a little better much of the time. The reason the Deck is more expensive is because you’re getting all that power on a mobile APU.

For the price of even the cheapest Steam Deck, you could build a PC that will run games better, especially since you’re already wanting to play docked so you already have a screen, mouse, and keyboard. Not to mention that the Docked experience of a Deck is janky. It often messes up the resolution, returns a black screen, or just doesn’t work for a variety of other reasons.

I just bought an OLED Deck after owning an LCD Deck since it came out. The Steam Deck is my favorite handheld of all time and an incredible system. But please, just build a new, stronger PC for that money if you’re only going to play Docked. Or buy a pre-built. Even GPUs from 2015 will outperform this thing, and you can get those for like $100 or less.

  • I think the Steam Deck, with its massive bezels, poor battery life, loud fans, and low resolution screen, will age particularly horribly, yeah. My kids are gonna find mine in a box one day and wonder wtf it even is or how anybody tolerated gaming on it. It’s just how things go. I remember holding a game gear for the first time in the 90s and being absolutely blown away by the screen and visuals. Looking at one now, it looks ridiculous.

    It’s just how tech goes.

Did you read/watch the reviews? Or did you just grab screenshots of scores and run over here?

    • The launch Steam Deck had a ton of issues, many of which are listed in that review.
    • There weren’t many verified games for Steam Deck at launch.
    • The Steam Deck has largely improved over time.
    • The PS Portal is the best in its class. That is to say, it offers the best remote play experience. Better than a phone, tablet, or even a Steam deck or other PC handhelds.

Either way, this post is disingenuous. You’re comparing the score an outlet gave to a streaming device to the score they gave to a handheld PC. It’s like comparing the score they gave an IPhone to the score they gave a gaming laptop. They are different things.
