We all know that Holmes and Campbell said that he was a bit of a project, but it’s a bit concerning that there seems to be no plan to get him on the field any time soon.
Granted, the 3 players selected with the picks traded for him - Jon Gaines II, Clayton Tune, and Owen Pappoe, have done nothing for the Cardinals, but considering Holmes’ ability to draft, any 3 for 1 trade needs to be a hit.
The team’s success thus far is covering it up, but for a third rounder to not even be sniffing the field is a bit concerning that it was a completely wasted move.
Daddy chill
Bro it’s the draft. It’s very rare to find first year starter talent in the 3rd round even less likely we find starters with the picks we traded to move up. I’d give the kid at least until the start of next season before we call it a bad pick. Even then you’ll have that since drafting is an inexact science. These GMs and scouts have no idea how people will respond when football is there life 100% or the time. Will they act like they did in college and give 25% of there effort to the sport? Or will they devote every minute or the day and be obsessed with football? It’s impossible to tell and that’s usually what separates great from mediocre.
About 10 3rd rounders from the 2023 draft have played enough snaps to get a grade on PFF. I wouldn’t sweat it too much.
I’d like to add to the points everybody has already made, look at how long it took the guys in front of him (Buggs and Jones) to earn starting minutes.
Last year’s draft was very weak beyond day 2, when kickers/punters start getting taken just assume you’re taking flyers on guys.
Martin has flashed raw power in camp. By all accounts he’s working his butt off to get better. That’s about all you’re going to hear about him this year unless we get multiple injuries on the interior.
If your biggest concern about a team’s draft 6 months later is how much playing time their 6th selection is getting, I would argue that you’re being unreasonable, and that was a pretty successful draft.
This is a smooth-brained take.
They’ve been clear from the start Martin is a long term project they see high upside in. It’s also completely normal on good teams for rookies to sometimes never see the field in week 1. Expecting a mid round rookie to produce right away is an SOL mindset.
We don’t need him on the field. Minus the blunder the entire team had in BAL, we had the best run defense in the team; so why do we need Martin to start at all right now??
Not concerning… even second round isn’t for sure gonna hit the field in year 1. 3rd and later tend to take longer pr have to get lucky breaks through injuries… id rather it take longer not an issue.
Rookies playing for the Cardinals is because that team is lacking in overall talent. Same way we got a lot of use out of rookies in MCDC’s first 2 years.
Someone posted some his college highlights recently and he did look rough. managing to do well do his just this natural physical abilities - but would be pretty brutalized on the NFL level. I think they knew going in it would be a while.
He might develop, he might not. I think Holmes has earned our benefit of the doubt at this point, but busts happen too. I do think this sub refuses to acknowledge when a player is a bust though.
They made James Houston wait and that turned out alright 🤷♂️
Wake up babe, time for the weekly Broderic Martin post where we bash a third round pick for not making an immediate impact 7 weeks in the season 🤩
You gotta relax brother. It’s a 3rd round pick in a position we already are happy with the depth at. The longer they aren’t forced to play him the happier they are gonna be. Developmental guys take time sometimes more than a full season. Remember Aaron Rodgers didnt play for 3 years. Rookies aren’t always ready.
We all know that Holmes and Campbell said that he was a bit of a project,
Yep. That’s it. He’s a project.
Not everything is a referendum on the entire regime.
No, he’s a project.
