I’ve been a fan since 2003. I remember the Pistons being good and then bad. I’ve never seen them go from bad to good though. For fans that have, what finally clicked to make them good again? Is the situation we are in now comparable to another bad spell? Or are we truly seeing the worst it’s ever been?
YES. I have watched nearly every single televised game since 1984. And I can tell you for a fact, this is the worst I’ve ever seen them. And this is coming off last years 17-win team. It’s honestly unwatchable and unacceptable.
I’ve never seen them go from bad to good though. For fans that have, what finally clicked to make them good again?
If you’re talking bad to genuinely good, then you’ll be exclusively asking Pistons fans who were watching from the early '80s into the Bad Boys era and/or the late '90s into the Going to Work era. Nobody who began watching after 2001 has experienced that.
Is the situation we are in now comparable to another bad spell?
In terms of the sheer length of it, this team has never been anywhere near this bad for such a long period. The Pistons have gone 15 years without even so much as a single game won in the postseason and only two postseason appearances overall. Over the last two decades, only the Timberwolves, Kings, and Hornets have had comparably bad stretches.
Or are we truly seeing the worst it’s ever been?
I’d argue that the late Dumars era, in which the Pistons were not only fielding awful rosters and losing but doing so in the course of trying to actually win (and not rebuilding), was considerably worse. The Van Gundy era wasn’t a great deal better than that.
No.
This is a really young team with a new coach, I expect mistakes and learning to win without a lot of veteran leadership.
Not even close. As others said, the Charlie V Ben Gordon going into the Josh Smith years were worse.
Contrary to popular belief, this team is one of the most promising Pistons teams in quite some time. This team is just young (aka still learning how to win). Go back and find me a Piston rookie comparable to Cade, Ausar, Duren, or even Ivey in the past 25yrs….and they’re all on the same team right now!
Nephews just inpatient.
Anyone downvoting a comment saying this isn’t the worst the pistons have been clearly were not fans during the 2010s.
There’s more talent in Ivey’s left leg than there was for any player during that stretch.
If we had an all time pistons team during the 2010s it would literally be something like:
G: Brandon Jennings
G: Reggie Jackson
F: Tobias Harris
F: Blake Griffin (for pretty much one season)
C: Drummond
That team is ass, yet those are the most talented players we had for the entire decade.
Relax Griffin in his one season was so clear of everyone on our team rn that this is an absolute joke
Yeah no shit he was our only all star of the whole decade that deserved it and then immediately died after that season hahahah and we punted our future four years down the road just to get him
It’s unfair to compare griffin in his 10th season to our guys now when they are all rookies or second year players (outside kill & stew)
Yes.
Unwatchable, uncompetitive basketball sucks.
I’ll take mediocrity over this. I’ll go back.
I have been hoping for a rebuild like this since 2009. I have always dreamed of having a bunch of young guys on a team, and then one day they just all start to develop at the same time and starting making some noise. The wait will be tough, but sorta like how the Lions just popped out of the blue one day; I know this team is going to be very different after they spend $65 million in cap space in the offseason.
It’s not even close to the worst. People are so blinded by recency bias we are forgetting that the beginning of the season we were very exciting and fun to watch. Then Duren got hurt and everything went to shit. We are loaded with talent and will be just fine once they develop and get healthy
