Hey Reddit, I’m looking for y’alls diverse thoughts and opinions on 1. Parenting 2. The video game industry 3. What effect games have on kids. Now I grew up as a gamer, games were my escape, my coping mechanism which I’m sure is true for other people too. My question for y’all is how did you grow up with your games;- and in the age of me too, did some games you played as a kid age terribly? What do you hope to see from more games going into the future? Please feel free to answer any of these or lurk;- thanks for reading my post :)

I guess the violence is the issue, I won’t allow my kids to play violent games, i started with the SnowBros in the late 90s on Sega.

I won’t let my kids play certain games until they are the age on the ESRB rating.

None my Aunt sheltered her kids from Call of Duty… They still got the experience from their friends and ended up with a worse parental relationship as a result

My first game was DOOM, so no real off the table games for any offspring of mine. Making it forbidden just makes it more wanted. For a real life example, my parents offered to buy me cigarettes as a teen so I could hack and cough around them instead of doing something embarrassing in front of my friends. Suddenly any appeal it might have had was gone lol.

There WILL be a discussion about lootboxes, gambling, and moderation because I’ve fallen for them. The engineering going into videogames to make them addictive is insane and anyone can fall for the tricks.

I’m a 30yr old tru gamer that plays every type of game and a big mix of new and retro games. The game that scares me and I don’t want my kid playing is Roblox. Maybe I’m ignorant cause I do know very little about it but the stuff I hear about scammers and creeps being on there scares me a lot. Beyond that, violent and vulgar games don’t matter to me. I’m more concerned about online safety.

you should probably wait til your kid is at least 16 before buying them a GTA game, not because of the violence, but because of the offensive humor and the online interactions. like, my sister and i were very rude kids growing up and we played lots of GTA which i dont think helped.

you should also not let them speak online on their headset until they reach their late teens. it will take all of their time and they’ll never listen to you again.

roblox is a funny one because i played that at the age of 14 and i already thought i was too old for it but honestly it’s not a safe game for anyone younger than that.
