Eagles (8-1) @ Chiefs (7-2)
NFC Standings right now:
Eagles (8-1)
Lions (8-2)
9r (7-3)
…
If Eagles lose they’re 8-2 like the Lions. But the fun rules in the NFL mean we would be in first place in the NFC, because we beat the Chiefs and they didn’t. (And because both teams beat Tampa)
So tonight I am a chiefs fan. I will put ketchup on my steak. I will do the stupid tomahawk salute. I’ll even listen to a Taylor Swift album. I want to see the Lions at the top of the NFC standings, I will suffer all these indignities if it will help. I’ll sell out to KC for one night only, I might even make red Koolaid.
Will you guys join me?
Thanks man, without this I wouldn’t have had any idea that we should be rooting against the team above us in the conference standings.
Happy to help. I got a good think maker.
No, they would still be in first place because of conference losses which is a tie breaker before common opponents.
Everyone keeps saying this, it’s not true.
The 2nd step is in conference win loss PERCENTAGE. And since the season in ongoing those numbers can’t be calculated. We don’t know for sure how many games the team will play in a season (See Buffalo V Cincy a couple years ago).
So the next step is to view the records against like opponents, which CAN be calculated because we know which teams we and they have played.
Is it a technicality? Absolutely!
Am I okay with that? Damn right!
But the fun rules in the NFL mean we would be in first place in the NFC, because we beat the Chiefs and they didn’t. (And because both teams beat Tampa)
Nope. We lose on Conference Record.
EDIT: If we win on Thursday, however, we will hold the #1 Seed for at least a few days.
You’re incorrect.
We lose on conference win loss PERCENTAGE
That’s impossible to calculate until the end of the season, since it’s possible (though unlikely) that a game is cancelled or is not finished.
They changed the rule after Cinci v Buffalo last year, the Hamlin incident.
Bruh. This has been posted 15 times.
We will not be in first place. That’s not how the tiebreakers work.
No?
Go find the rule that disputes my claims then. Cite the rule to me that explains it.
It is exactly how Conference tiebreakers work in the NFL. It’s based on record against shared opponents. Look it up.
My mind is blown. How did you come up with this theory. This is amazing.
Can you walk us through your calculations if I setup a Zoom call?
