As a European, the NBA is fairly new to me. But it’s an exciting sport to watch. So far we’ve watched a couple of games and I really enjoy how the SA Spurs play. I really liked how Collins is playing and find it hilarious when Wembanyama just grabs a ball out of the air in front of the basket. The 3-pointers he shoots are beautiful.
But… I don’t wanna fan up completely to a team, based on 1 or 2 games I’ve watched, in a sport that I don’t fully understand.

Can anyone educate me about where to go look for historic reference, mentality of clubs and players etc etc. And how do the Spurs fit in the regular American viewer?

If you like the Spurs because how they play right now, you need to find a better team.

Hmm… If you have time to slow play it a bit… Maybe you could just hover around the sub and watch highlights for a while. If you take a month or two, you’ll organically get an idea of the reputations of the teams (the coach for SA is highly-regarded, Wemby is going through his first NBA learning curve, the team has a history of good luck in the draft and thoughtful roster construction, etc…). If you find yourself looking forward to a group of highlights for a team, you can always adopt them after a little bit, and then you don’t have to worry about getting too attached to a team that doesn’t really produce the most opportunities for you to have a satisfying spectating experience.

Mavs are the most European “friendly” teams. The team recruits a lot of European players. The GOAT Maverick is a European, and they have Luka, a potential top 10 player ever, on their team now. The Spurs are very international team. Two thirds of their dynasty consists of the greatest French player and the greatest South American player of all time. They also recently drafted Wemby, another French player, who might overtake Tony Parker.

Actually, thinking about it, all of the Texas teams had their best years with International players as their #1 or #2/#3 in the case of the Spurs.

I must admit that I really liked how Wemby just grabs balls out of mid air in front of the basket, but he sure knows how to throw a beautiful 3 pointer.

Go with the team with your favorite color scheme or logo. Style of play will change with personnel, coaching staffs and front offices so what you like today may not be what they are doing next year.

Spurs, thanks to pop, are the closest team to European gameplay in the NBA for the last 20+ years. They play with a lot of ball movement, relayed heavily on international players and pop is known to study European coaches and implement it to his game. The problem is that pop is close to retirement so I’m not sure for how long he will keep going and after he leaves, anything could happen. Other than him, its more about players. Nuggets with Jokic are joy to watch, kings are also young and fun team to watch so it depends. I always say, watch NBA more regularly for a few months and you will start supporting some team without knowing why

If you do pick the Spurs just know they won’t be very good this year or the next. Eventually they will be a powerhouse around a superstar in Wemby but it’s gonna be rough rn

Don’t know what the main sport you follow is, but in historic terms… think of a club in your league in the sport you know that was a true dynasty with probably the best player ever at his position and a legendary coach about 10-15 years ago, but has since fallen on hard times and is just now starting to rebuild from the ashes with one of the most exciting young players in the sport right now. That’s pretty much where the Spurs are today.

You also have to have a genuine love for big women that double-fist churros too lmao.
