At first I had no clue what the guy was talking about based on all the headlines that are being written. I was like “30%, thats standard across the industry. This just sounds like someone trying to cash in on the Epic vs Apple lawsuit statements”. Not to mention that fact that its Sony so why would anyone else have a say in what gets sold on their store.
But then I read it carefully and I understand now. Hes talking about the fact that you can only buy digital games for the Playstation on the Playstation store. If you want to buy an Xbox game digitally, you can go to other places other than the Xbox Marketplace, like Amazon or Best Buy, and Target has all manner of digital game codes for Nintendo games so the eShop isnt the only place for you to buy Nintendo games digitally. But for Playstation the only place you can buy digital games for the PS Store is literally through Playstation.
When I thought about it, I dont thought about it, maybe it was because I primarily bought physical copies of my games and never really paid much attention to it. or maybe its always been like that and I didnt notice, but I could have swore at one point that you could. But I looked up Playstation games on other storefronts and yeah no…I couldnt find any digital copies. If you go to Best Buy and look up games like Horizon, God of War or Spiderman, they only offer you the physical copies for the Playstation. If you try a 3rd party game like Dead Space, under the Playstation 5 option it gives you the two choices of Physical or Digital, but when you try to click the Digital version it changes you to Windows or Xbox because there is no digital version of the game for Playstation that they are able to sell. However, for Xbox Series and Windows they offer both the physical and digital copies. Same on Amazon. So thats what hes getting at, the fact that he cant buy Playstation digital games anywhere else but the Playstation store be they 1st party or 3rd party.
That being said, as consumer friendly as his stance is, this still seems like a frivolous lawsuit. For one thing, everyone knows the 30% is standard, and digital copies on games rarely ever go on sale even at other places so the “damages” claim is an exaggeration at best. Ive never seen a sale for digital game cards at Best Buy or Target, even if Xbox and Nintendo were having sales on their digital stores, so claiming that other competitors arent able to sell them and its hurting the consumer seems like a very loose argument to stand on. That, and like others have pointed out in their comments, during his AMA and in other examples around the internet he carries himself very odd. Dubbing himself the “consumer champion”, and given all the negative responses to his vague and misdirecting answers he doesnt really seem like he has much of a handle on this situation.
