In a vacuum I’m not sure this is a huge problem. 3rd down and 4th-quarter comeback situations are when a quarterback “should” be most aggressive, which would of course lead to a higher risk of turnovers. That said, we’re not really seeing the benefits of that aggression as much as we should be, so in that sense it’s frustrating.

Ultimately, though, the seven games Fields has played so far are a small enough sample that I’m skeptical about slicing things further

    Imagine defending Getsy’s playcalling.

Did Fields call 3 straight screens? Did Fields stop his route early against the Broncos? Did Fields drop the pass against the Bucs (hint: the guy who did isn’t on the team anymore).

The Quay pick-six was bad. No defending it. But the rest were picks every other QB in the league would have thrown.

Imagine reading criticism of fields play and thinking that’s defending getsys play calling.

These have been issues across every year of fields play. Fields isn’t the only qb with a bad oc and a bad line and whatever other excuses you want to cling to.

Getsy, eberflus, and poles should be fired. Fields should be backup unless some other gm is dumb enough to offer a 2nd. The new gm and hc should pick whoever they believe is the best qb in next years draft.

Considering the revolving door of an offensive line he played with before coming back, I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and see if he can improve on his down the stretch.

We could sit here, look at the stats, and then come to the surface level conclusion that he’s just straight up terrible in the 4th quarter/ 3rd down. But we all can see how this whole team breaks down in the 4th including the defense and the play calling. It doesn’t do anyone any good if you aren’t gonna look into why his stats are bad in the 4th quarter and 3rd down other than “he’s a bad QB”. That doesn’t get to any sort of solution nor does it pin point the problems on the offense or with the QB.

Why his stats are bad is because he’s an inaccurate qb who can’t read nfl defenses and when he can’t rely on his legs he crumbles.

Its the answer to the question of why when people look at his 170 passing yards with 4 turnovers and go well actually he had 270 total yards because he ran the ball! And yards are yards…while they also complain about going run, run, pass on the game losing drive.

Running is great, if you can pass the ball first. It’s why Steve Young is the only running qb with playoff success. Though hurts certainly played great in the super bowl, even if he didn’t exactly get much competition from the giants and qbless 49ers in getting there.

You know as well as I do that fields td % is going down and is inflated by two games and then getting injured. His int rate has been the same throughout his career. His 3rd down and 4th quarter struggles have been the same throughout the year.

Mitchell put up 8 touchdowns across two games too. Its not the sign that he’s suddenly someone new. He is who he has been for 3 years. A bad qb with great legs who can make a highlight throw or two or three a game. But across 32 starts he’s got 2 or 3 solid 60 minute games. Depending on if you consider the Washington game where he barely completed 50% of his passes a good 60 minutes or not.

The solution is to stop being off set. Get a new gm, new qb, new hc. They get 3 years to win a playoff game or keep rolling the dice until you get it right. This entire oh it’s not fields it’s getsy. Its not poles it’s eberflus. Doesn’t benefit anyone but the lions, packers, and vikings.

eh this is like the same thing as when people go “well over his last 17 games he’s got x yards and y TDs he’s so good!”

let’s use the eye test guys. he’s just not that good of a QB. maybe like like top 20-25 range in the NFL. definitely not a guy you should pay big money

You mean the team that calls two runs on a 4th quarter drive and puts us in 3rd and long is normal and the qb is supposed to just sling it?

You mean the team that calls the same screen play 3 times isn’t partly responsible for the team seeing it and intercepting it?

You mean the team that has a defense that lets up 30 points a game and the offense has to pass all game and one of the drives needed for a TD to lose 43-42 is the QBs fault?

Stats without context aren’t telling the truth.
