I think Lin Dan (badminton) and Ma Long (table tennis) are the best comparisons since they also play in racket sports where you play one-on-one against the opponent. Those two are undisputed GOATs in their sports but still don’t hold all the important records.
Racing sport is a bit different than head-to-head sports since you don’t have to figure out different play styles of your opponents to win, all you need to do is be faster.
Lee CW has won a lot more super series titles (kind of like masters in tennis) and has been world number 1 way longer, though Lin Dan destroys him in terms of the biggest titles and H2H.
Ma Long doesn’t have the most World Cup titles, but that’s about it.

Which important records exactly are Dan and Long lagging? I don’t think LCW or Waldner has any important record over them.

I still can’t forget 2016 Olympics finals. I was rooting for LCW so hard 🤧
I admire Lee’s game, but I have to admit there’s a pattern for him when it comes to the biggest moments.
Yeah, he’s my 2nd fav after Hidayat, but him not winning a single gold in world championships, asian games and the olympics will always haunt.
