I thought that Tepper would come here with a working knowledge of how a good organization is run considering he had a 5% ownership in the Steelers prior to buying the Panthers. But I just had an epiphany. He never had to hire anyone there.

Tepper bought into the Steelers in 2009. Mike Tomlin was hired in 2007 so not anything Tepper would’ve been involved in. The Steelers obviously haven’t had to hire a head coach since then (they’ve had 3 coaches since 1969…we’ve had 3 under Tepper). Okay, well maybe he helped hire a GM in that time? Nope. Colbert has been the GM there since 2000. So he’s never been part of that search for a GM or a HC before becoming the owner here and it really shows.

Who is going to want to come to Carolina and work for Tepper? They won’t get quality coaches to come work for him. Until Tepper sells, good luck finding a winning season.

I hope the media can ask for a transparent look into the process of identifying their coach, and the trade up?

If true, the owners went above the football people and made their pick, they should absolutely own it.

I feel like he’s getting way more hate for meddling in the team than certain coaches got for pimping out their cheerleaders

I wouldnt understate how much the DC fans hated snyder. They hated him so much that he got forced out. Thats rarely ever happened in sports.

that’s recency bias. people rightfully blasted Snyder across the country. If anything, his whole “FU i do what I want” was just a preview of the playbook that has defined the 2010s and 2020s.

He rivals Michael Jordan’s run as owner of the Hornets in terms of ownership futility in professional sports in Charlotte. That’s remarkable considering how consistently irrelevant the Hornets were nearly every season under MJ.

Jordan was awful but at least he brought back the Hornets and I feel like its significantly harder to be good in the NBA. Tepper inherited a team that was good and typically always in the mix. He then proceeded to scorch the entire thing to the ground so bad that we’re one of the worst teams in the league with no hope of getting better.

Jordan inherited one of the worst run franchises in the history of sports. Jordan fixed the communities relationship with the team and opened stuff like free health clinics and basketball courts. He was a bad owner for his on court product.

I have family and friends in charlotte who are lawyers and work in commercial real estate. All of them have had to deal with the team at some level since he bought it. I have not talked to a single person who thinks he isnt an unbelievable asshole.

Hopefully we make our field goals this week and have good punts or we’ll have a new coach next week.

An NFL team is a money printing machine. The earnings floor is way too high to induce anyone to quit. Basically the only way to lose money on an NFL team is to do what David Tepper has done, just more aggressively: giant guaranteed contracts and an itchy trigger finger. But you’d have to hand out $27M/4y years guaranteed to everyone from the HC to the groundskeeper to bankrupt David Tepper. And even if he ran dry, he’s a Wall Street chump - he’d just sell it to a Chinese private equity group who’d strip it down to the frame to show profitability and sell it again.

We’re stuck with him. Our only hope is that he decides this shit is too much of a headache and hires a president (other than his fuckin’ wife) to run it for him and they just give him the checks.

“Trying to find his Mike Tomlin…”

This dude lobbied Rooney to fire Tomlin in a knee-jerk reaction to the Steelers losing a playoff game. Private equity folks aren’t good at building things; they’re good at buying stuff already built and milking the value out of it.
