Everyone’s coming down on Weaver because he didn’t sign a free agent this summer. I understand the hate relative to their record, but really—who should he have signed? To me, this is much more of a Monty issue that I don’t think signing Cam Johnson for $30+ million a year would have solved.

Not a free agency move, but last trade deadline, the Wizards gave up Rui Hachimura for virtually nothing. That would have been a low cost move to gain a player who fits what we need right now. Grant Williams has looked good for Dallas, though it seems like he wanted to play on a competitive team.

I think he could have signed some reliable rotation guys who would be with the team for awhile. He instead kicked the can down the road in favor of taking on Harris’s expiring deal.

He also failed to provide enough forward depth or to sign an honest-to-goodness third-string point guard so this team wouldn’t yet again be forced to give Killian big minutes in the event of an injury.

Basic moves to shore up the periphery of the rotation could have been made but weren’t.

He instead kicked the can down the road in favor of taking on Harris’s expiring deal alongside some minor draft compensation. Given how Harris looked last season after his surgeries, there was no realistic prospect of him playing productive minutes.

Maybe I’m making excuses, which is weird because I haven’t really ever been fully sold on Troy being any good.

Anyways, onto the excuses or what I think the thought-process is…

Keep the flexibility, use the vets to evaluate the young guys, count on internal growth and Monty making the team a bit better. Then use the cap space in 2024 with a better grip on how to move forward with the young guys.

Conveniently, it’s also a good way to keep a job as GM. Draft young talent and kick the can down the road saying next year is when you’ll commit to being competitive.

Morris wasn’t a free agent acquisition, but he would have been a solid pickup if he had been. Beyond that, Weaver passed on the chance to add even a single long-term role player of any sort and instead kicked the can down the road in favor of taking on Harris’s expiring deal alongside some minor draft compensation. Given how Harris looked last season after his surgeries, there was no realistic prospect of him playing productive minutes.

Weaver also failed to secure sufficient forward depth and to sign an honest-to-goodness third-string point guard so this team wouldn’t yet again be forced to give Killian big minutes in the event of an injury.

In sum, he could have at least some very basic moves, even if adding another decent role player wasn’t in the cards. Not did only he not do so, but he even actually left some holes in the roster which have thus far been painful to the team’s performance. It was not ideal.

Who r we going to sign next year? Thats our (my) point. Any guy he’s going to trade for last offseason he could have this last one because no signing is going to come…

The biggest (realistic) miss in free agency wasn’t from not signing a specific player. It was from not trading for John Collins. John Collins was traded for Rudy Gay (salary dump) and a 2nd. We could’ve traded Killian and a 2nd and got him. This season, he’s shooting 41.8% from 3 and could’ve been a solid PF for us for the next 3 seasons.

Another big (realistic) miss was Cedi Osman. The Spurs acquired him and a 2nd for nothing in a salary dump. He’s shooting 41.3% from 3 this season and would’ve provided valuable forward depth.

We could’ve done both of these deals and still had room left over to trade a 2nd for Monte Morris. He is one of the best backup PGs in the league, a career 39% 3pt shooter and one of the league leaders in assist to turnover ratio.
