I run a modestly successful small gardening business. It took me a year to really get it going properly. For context im in my 30s and have worked in really demanding jobs to get into a position to start something.

Ever since I went full-time my sibling has had this attitude like I just won the lottery and wont share. Other people have also started acting like im driving around in a RollsRoyce with a monocle, I don’t really get it.

I give my sibling left over gardening supplies and i’ve sub contracted another friend who lost their job. Trying to share my success when I can. Whats with the hostility? Have other people experienced this kind of thing?

Over 2 decades in business and I had good friends trying to get me to go back to being a janitor for the local school system just because of the benefits. It quite honestly bordered on insulting. Throw away 20+ years in business and a very large pay cut to go back to mopping up piss in the boy’s room, not out of necessity, but simply for benefits? Some people are unable to understand or appreciate being in business for one’s self.

Ahh where do I start, employees that think you just go to the bank and get free money, Peple prefer failures to people that are not in the mould.

When you’re on your way up everyone roots for you because you remind them of their dreams.
When you’re at the top everyone tears you down because you remind them of what they gave up on.

    Stop would be my advice.

Stop giving things to people who can’t be happy for you. Stop also doing non optimal things to help people.

People won’t thank you for it. I did the same for someone years ago only to find out I was being slagged off. I was lording it over people apparently.

I got him a job offshore at £400 a day for unskilled IT labour. Prior to that he was part time minimum wage. I though I was helping and it would feel like the jackpot. I even said I couldn’t manage him as I knew him but would make an intro and leave the rest to him.

It was an eye opening for me.

It’s common. And it’s not going to change, and will get worse the more successful you get. It’s rare anyone not in business to understand how it works.

Just wait till your sibling decides to start the same business. The feeling of betrayal would be immense. And you also have a friend coming in, that’s a possibility as well.

The issue is, people think that you just show up and do nothing to make the money. The people who actually are in the game know how hard it is to work through all this- managing to get new clients, managing finances payroll and so on.

The solution? Get a thick skin, and stay humble. No bragging, or sharing your plans with anyone. Just keep your head down, work hard and when you make bank, make sure you have fun with it as well. That Porsche isn’t gonna drive itself.

It happens almost always. When you try doing something that goes against the tide and against the set societal norms, you get the hostility. Basically, you broke the normal, got out of the matrix and showed others it is possible for them too, but they don’t want to change and try to drag you down to their level of “normal”
