Buying nice things demonstrates the ability to provide as a protector; similar to how some male birds build their impressive nests with shiny baubles. Spending resources on something that only benefits yourself in that context would be considered unusual, or even selfish.
Of course, there’s many different varieties of bird. Better to try and find one that matches your values.
