This is my 2nd employee. The first one I am going to have to fire.
It’s due to a lack of effort. Phones and music are allowed due to the job being monotonous. Every time I pass by their office they quickly get off the phone.
I can tell when someone is trying or not with this specific job. Also, I have asked and stated to ask me any questions if needed. Expectations are clear.
This is the 5th day they are working for me. Do I need documentation?
Communication is incredibly important in business. Speak to them and encouragingly explain to them how they can do better.
I’ll leave the other comments there. But if you do eventually fire this person, keep it simple. “sorry it’s just not a good fit for us.” Keep it short and don’t go into any details. Have a witness if possible and give them their final paycheck and have them sign for it. In my State if you fire them within 30 days they don’t get unemployment.
We usually try someone out for a month as an independent contractor before hiring. We also have a policy against using phones at work. We are a retail store. Phones are ok at lunch time, but otherwise they must be kept in their locker. If you don’t want ppl to use their phones, might be good to enforce a policy? Technically, they aren’t doing anything “wrong”. Also, have a conversation before firing them. They should have a right to know and time to correct their mistakes before getting fired.
