I’m (F24) new to Overwatch & have been learning the game on Xbox over the last two days. I don’t have many heroes unlocked and I’m only semi-decent playing as Dva. It’s been pretty upsetting trying to learn a new game and have some fun while being told I’m trash every 5 seconds. I know I’m not great but I’m getting about 15-20 kills during a good game. The toxicity of the chat makes a newb like me feel pretty crappy lol. Is everyone a jerk on overwatch? The game is fun the ppl suck

Don’t socialize in game. Probably some of the worst people you could find

Ngl, I’m one of those assholes.

I used to rage at games, but overwatch made me a different person.

I rage at everything, and cuz I don’t got a stress ball or a punching bag, I either hit my knee, pillow, or I just type shit in chat.

Being able to get kills don’t really make you better or worse when you’re new, primarily it’s how you interact as a tank (yes I know it’s not a competitive mode but people still don’t want to lose). Things like protecting your team, big plays, cancelling or preventing big plays by the opposing team, or targeting the most annoying enemy.

Overwatch is more than a stat game and there will always be toxic people (guilty I’ve been there but it’s never personal).

You’ll have to find some friends online and play with them! It’s a ton of fun to play with your friends 😁 Two Important things to remember about playing overwatch: 1) the main goal is to have fun! (BUT) 2) there is nothing fun about getting absolutely rolled.

So, find the role that suits your playstyle (everyone has one), and then pick a main character out of the role to master! Every character has its counters, so be sure to learn hero interactions and you’ll be well on your way. It’s like a super advanced game of rock paper scissors, with other elements that come into play and cause things to go the way they did. Look up ability interactions, ult economy usage, and you’ll merk all those scrubs who talk shit. Good luck, have fun!!!

I’d recommend starting damage or support to reduce some of the inbound negativity. It’s really easy to blame the tank for everything and some people do exactly that.

I always tell people in QP that if you wanna take it that seriously, go play comp. But I get it. I started last season and have been navigating it by myself for a minute.

I dunno if everyone is a jerk but even super conservatively 1 out of 10 people are so you will got 1 in every game. In reality the number is probably more like 3 in 10 people, plus an extra 2 out of 10 people who are only mean to women.

So yeah the chances of not having one jerk in your game is basically none. Nice people usually stay off chat so we just hear and see the jerks.

It’s tough playing a game as a woman with a player base half of whom have never spoken to one without ulterior motives. Sorry about your experience. Try to make some friends and play with them. It made my experience of learning OW much more pleasant.

Yes. 1) it’s the gaming community, 2) you’re a girl though I don’t know if you use your mic or not but if you did, things would be worse for you

There are nice people, but they’re usually quiet, or have chat turned off to not read/listen to the jerks. The rude people are the loudest. I’d say 1/5 are jerks, 1/5 are nice and vocal, 1/5 are nice and quiet, and 2/5 are neutral and just playing the game. And rarely there are jerks who realize they were jerks and apologize halfway through the game (which I respect).

I’m sad that you haven’t had any nice/vocal people stick up for you. <3 I wouldn’t call myself nice (bc my internal monologue can be mean lol), but if someone on my team is flaming our teammate, I usually try to tell them to chill at the very least.

If you mean literally everyone in the game, no. In quick play and bronze 90% of players never use text chat except to say gg at the end, and way fewer people use voice chat. Though the higher you go up the competitive ladder, the worse the toxicity gets. In silver, almost every game has somebody using voice (because you can call out enemies much faster that way), which means an increased chance of running into toxic players.

I think most people in most games are just assholes for some reason. When I started playing R6, I experienced a decent amount of toxicity from teammates and enemies. I only had 7 hours in the game but had experienced enough toxicity to make me want to turn off chat. Which I did. And I’d recommend you do the same

This is standard, I’ve been lynched, harassed when hard carrying the team. Some kid was yelling at me for heals, I didn’t have a mic plugged in to he kept singling me out. Never been so pissed in OW, it made me play even better and when it’s the final push and it’s me 1v3, I’m Moira I take out all of them and push the payload over the finish line and the kid kept screaming “OMG Genji!! You are so good, thank you, great job!” We didn’t even have a Genji on the team… 🥲

So in short, dont mind them, mute if you need to 👌

I know a lot of people said this already but go to options and turn chat off. You can see when people stop to type and nothing goes on chat, its so funny
