Im not much of a gamer (ironically I make games for a living) but I made a bet with my kids that if the Detroit Lions make the playoffs this year I’ll buy them a system, and its looking like almost a lock to happen, so I want to get in on some Holiday deals.
This is their first non-Nintendo system so I’m a little lost on which way to go at this point in the generation cycle. For reference they’re 7 and 9 year old boys and are gonna be new to gaming that isnt based around crafting or Italian brothers. (i made them use my old NES, then SNES first, then got them a Switch a couple years back)
Ps5 is pretty good with a subscription for games netflix but xbox has that subscription better and playstation has better exclusives than xbox
PC , huge libraries, high performance and when you’re done just alt tab to another window and do your taxes
I love my PS5 (I have ADHD and other sensory issues so I prefer to “stick to what I know” if that makes sense) but my husband has Xbox and the game pass is AMAZING and makes it so worth it.
But it does depend on personal preferences and what their friends play on more, as not all games have crossplay. Both consoles play most of the same games.
I would day Xbox is the ways to go. The reason be GamePass Ultimate. That will save you a lot of money in the Long Run.
Not only does GamePass have a lot of Games for the Kids it also brings all the Xbox Games Coming Day 1 to GamePass not to mention a ton of 3rd Party Triple A games come out as well Day 1.
I bought the XBSX and PS5 Disc Day 1 through Pre-Order. Since then if I would have played only on Playstation I would have spent Hundreds of Dollars on Games. Enough to buy another PS5 and than some.
I’m just gonna say what I saved this year to make it easier, but just think it has been 3yrs+. Just to give an idea of how much you can save over years. Saving a lot of money from GamePass will let you in the future buy a PS5 if you want it.
With PS5 you will have to Pay for every game you want to play or go without playing it. Hoping that in the very long future they add it to the Very Expensive PS+ Premium.
The game I would have bought this year that I was able to save.
- Persona 5 Tactica-$60
- Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name (Yakuza 8)-$50
- Atomic Heart-$60
- Wo Long-$60
- Lies of P-$60
- Forza Motorsport-$60
- Like a Dragon: Ishin-$60
- Starfield-$60
- PayDay 3-$60
- Sea of Stars-$35
There are a lot more games that I would have bought. Most Indies. Though those are the Main ones this year. Not to mention I was able to Play so many games that I would have never payed for and was able to try them since the free. Games like Human Kind, Party Animals etc.
Not to mention Im already happy Im saving money with Persona 3 Reload and a few other upcoming games that have been disclosed.
Anyways, I love all consoles and have all consoles including PC (i7 13700K RTX4080) which makes Xbox even better since you can take you games there and save files. Not to mention you can use the same account at the same time on PC and Xbox. (have not tried same game) Digital games only.
I can also play them on my ROG ALLY on the go. Currently playing all the Yakuza games on it. They are also all on GamePass so that’s more than $200 that I have saved.
PlayStation 5 is also great. That said they have been releasing games very long intervals. Tends to be Sequels that will also be on PC and do not add any 1st Party or 3rd Party Triple A games Day 1 or within Months to the Service despite being more Expensive. Not to mention Unlike Xbox it does not expand to PC.
So, for kids I would say again Xbox since it will save you money and you and the kids will always have something to play since they are always adding games for all ages.
I have both.
I prefer PlayStations library of games. I much prefer the PS controller. Better vibration depth of expression/feedback. The triggers give actual resistance for certain games which is amazing. The touch pad is nice for certain games and can sort of be used as a mouse.
I vote PS :)
The main reasons for choosing are 1) what system does a majority of his friends play on so they can play together, and 2) what exclusive games interest him the most
Gamepass is worth it alone. Yes it costs money but there’s a lot of games including kids games.
The biggest distinction would be either Sony’s handful of amazing exclusives or Xbox Game Pass. I saw one of your comments about paying $60 for Pokémon and having it suck. Both of the options above I think would help with that.
Sony’s exclusives are known to be amazing. I can’t speak to how well they will be for your kids due to their age and the content within them but they are highly regarded nevertheless. I don’t own a PS5 so I can’t speak much more on them but I can’t ignore their exclusives.
Game Pass would allow you and your kids to try all sorts of games. All of Microsoft’s first party release (which should continue to grow due to all the acquisitions they have made with Bethesda, Activision-Blizzard, etc) will be on there day and date of the games release. EA Play is also included with it and can play games that EA puts in there as well. Personally I have found a love for the Persona series because of Game Pass because I never had a PlayStation to try them and this lowered the cost of entry for me. And depending on how old your kids are, there are younger kids games in there as well that my 5 year old has enjoyed.
Hope this helps!
I don’t really gravitate towards the Xbox but I also teach kids programming and game design and I would love some insights into your thinking on this one
Honestly no real difference atm as I’m assuming your kids are younger and exclusives are generally more mature games. If they have friends with one then I’d go with that so they can play together.
PlayStation has the better exclusives, but a lot of kids have Xbox so they might want that if their friends play online.
I have personal reasons to not get Xbox (lost faith in the brand years ago) so I will hype up PlayStation to no end and talk shit about Xbox until the heat death of the universe, but if it’s for your kids then get them what their friends have so they can play together.
Drop $2500 on a gaming rig, and figure out how to lock them out of it until they spend x amount of time on some coding software learning to write code.
It’s a big initial investment, but they can get all the games they’d want on console on the pc, they can use a controller if that’s their thing, and most importantly you can use it to teach them valuable skills that extend even beyond coding.
PS5 has a lot more exclusive titles, Xbox has GamePass which lets them play multiplayer if you’d like and gives them access to a lot of games.
Go Lions!
PS5 has far and above better games available on it
