So with everyone wanting to discuss a Goff extension, I’ll give a hypothetical.

Would you rather pay Goff lower per year, on a longer contract, mostly guaranteed? Or a short term contract, with less guaranteed, but a higher per year.

Here are extremes:

  1. 10 years, 300 million fully guaranteed.

  2. 3 years, 210 non guaranteed.

Every contract falls somewhere in the middle, but curious what folks are thinking.

Why extend him when we theoretically have 3 more years we can push it out

Because that’s how you signal to other players that you’re an organization that doesn’t value its players.

Double franchise tags are rare and create disgruntled players and others around the league see that.

The double-franchise tag almost always backfires. It’s a last resort and likely won’t come to that.

If you want to push it out would you rather not just resign him?

The shorter the term the higher the money/guarantees per year. Jared has just turned 29, unless he retires prematurely then he’s doing everything to prove he should be the Lions QB for the next 6/7 seasons.

He should get top of the market money, because the top of the market keeps rising and by the end of the contract it’s comparatively cheap. But I’m sure the team are talking to him about not just his earning aspirations but his career so we can succession plan effectively and offer him a contract that fits his desire.

Likely wishful thinking, but I’ve started wondering whether Goff will accept a very team friendly contract, at least in terms of annual $. He seems to be happy, it will contribute to the team’s (and thus his) success, making DET a real winner might give him a shot at the HOF, he’s already rich AF, lives in a relatively low cost of living region, and knows what it’s like to be miserable in the NFL. History, human nature and the comp model for sports agents make me think it’s unlikely, but boy would it be sweet.
