I just got myself a G31 540i 2022 and is the first automatic transmission I have ever driven.

Compared to my MT E60, the gears are really, really slow.

I thought that there is a problem whth the car so I brought it in for check at BMW. They told me it is normal…

It switches fast when gets going, but the kickdown is unexpectedly slow.

    So: manual for me 🤷‍♂️

    Paddle shifts are a blast.

Then when I’m done with that, I hand shifting back over to the ZF transmission.

BMW manuals aren’t very good but their DCT is one of the best in the industry.

Have the 8speed ZF auto in my F30 and I love it. But I miss rowing gears and am looking to get a 2nd ‘fun’ car that will definitely have a standard. Drove manuals in L.A. for yeeeaaars before going over to automatic and don’t miss it for some of these godawful commutes; gets to be tedious. For driver involvement though, no substitute really for manual, if you know you know, etc. Again, the auto is great but will be looking for some sort of e90 6 spd coupe 2008-10 328 or 35 to have some fun in. Maybe an old Boxster or something.

On my 4th year of driving my 335i daily and never had an issue with traffic I just love the feeling of driving a manual sports car. I’ve never driven a dct car but everytime I’m searching for a new car it always has to be manual( so if anyone has a manual m2 or f80 m3 for cheap I’ll take it lmao)

I learned on an automatic and didn’t actually learn to drive a stick until later. After that, my next couple cars were manuals until I bought my truck in '16. Manual wasn’t even an option at the trim level I wanted, so I ‘came back’

Honestly, while driving a manual can be fun from time to time, I doubt I’ll ever own one again outside of winning the lottery and having a multicar garage with multiple ‘for fun’ cars. Even when I have my pre-planned Midlife crisis and buy a 911, it’ll be an automatic.

I’m generally not after purity…just pleasure.

The responses on this topic reveal the average age of members in this subreddit: 25 years or younger: manual Older than 25: automatic

I fall in the last category, but once was a manual fan too. Automatic was for grandfathers with Volvo’s but not for real drivers like myself! Nowadays, I cannot imagine why on earth you want to change gear yourself.

Auto because I can’t drive manual and I daily my car. Getting caught up in traffic already sucks enough with an auto, can’t imagine what it would be like with a manual. I do use the paddles though when I’m driving for fun. I’d get a manual as a fun car if I had the space and money for a fun car

I like paddle shifters and not having to constantly change gear in traffic. Live in the Uk. Roadworks around every corner, stop start stop start ffs

I prefer automatic cars just because I can be more relaxed and focused on the road. Stopping at a red light or letting a person pass the road and playing with gears annoys me a little bit. With an automatic it’s just easier.

I passed my driver’s exam with a manual, and my father was all about manual cars. He used to say very stereotypical stuff about people who drive an automatic and he’d say he wants to feel the car and the gears. Eventually, he found a car that he really wanted to buy but it was an automatic. He still bought it and fell in love with it that now my entire family drives automatic cars.

Automatic, because I like to be able to have my hands on the steering wheel at ALL times. I fell like I have more CONTROL that way. It’s more fun for me too.
