I know it’s premature but I can’t stop thinking about what the Vikings will do in the off-season at QB. A few quick thoughts and a question.

Kirk Cousins - One of the best Purple Playcallers ever. Regardless of season results. He’s provided consistency and stability at the position for 5 seasons. The recent injury and creeping age are the biggest questions marks for him right now. Before the injury this season, though, he was playing some of the ball of his career.

Josh Dobbs - The newcomer has captured the hearts and minds of the Minnesota Faithful. Journeyman is a bit of a misnomer for him, because though he has had stops at 7 NFL teams in 7 seasons, he has only had one legitimate shot at starting. In 2023, he made a talent poor Arizona Cardinals team competitive, even pulling off an upset win against the Cowboys. In two games with Minnesota, he has shown a rare mix of pocket awareness and mobility, and that has led to an increase in scoring. The Vikings scored 31 points against Atlanta, and 27 this past week against the Saints, which are two of the top 3 point totals for the Vikings this season. The biggest concern for Dobbs is turnovers (5 INT and 4 fumbles this season).

Jaren Hall - The fifth round rookie backed up Cousins before getting the start against Atlanta. He looked solid in limited action before getting knocked out of the game due to a concussion. His opportunity seems to have come and gone, but with the Vikings injury luck this season, who knows whether his number is called again before the season is over?

What should the Vikings do at QB in the off-season? Stick with Kirk, move on with Dobbs, or take a chance on Hall? My money is on re-signing Kirk with Hall continuing his backup role. But if Dobbs leads the Vikings on a deep postseason run, this could get very interesting.

Sign Josh Dobbs, draft Jayden Daniels and bring him along slowly.

    2024:

    QB1: Josh Dobbs

    Back up: Jaren Hall

    3rd String: Jayden Daniels

    2025:

    QB1: Josh Dobbs

    Back up: Jayden Daniels

    3rd String: Jaren Hall

    2026:

    QB1: Jayden Daniels

    Back up: Jaren Hall

He takes over as the starter when he’s 25 years old with 2 years of experience in an NFL QB room. But if he outperforms Dobbs early on then throw him in there. Just because you draft a QB in the first or second doesn’t mean you have to play him right away. Mahomes went 11th overall and didn’t become the starter until year 2. Serving as a backup for a year or two can do good for a young QB.

If Dobbs keeps playing like this, and allows KOC to get more creative with the play calling they better have him back.

I’m still salty that we had the season we did in 2017 and then fired Keenum! I know he didn’t do well after that, but still should’ve been his job to lose. He fit well with the team that season.

So I’d hate for that to happen again.

But still should draft a qb. Seems like we always force ourselves to constantly question that position on this team!
